Canadien road identification question
Can someone explain how Canada marks their maps to identify what type of road it is. I am trying to setup a route to get to the rally and would like to know what type of roads I have picked out. Don't want to travel much what we would call Interstate but also don't want to get stuck on a gravel road either.
Thanks for the Help Don C

Don, this link may help for Quebec hyways. What you call interstates in Quebec we call Auto routes and have a pictogram of an overpass on their route number sheild. Secondary provincial hyways have green shields for their route numbers with 3 fleur de lis symbols on them. Ontario's equivalent of an interstate are identified by their number, they are all 400 series, 401 for example.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoroutes_of_Quebec Let me know your proposed crossing into Canada and the route. For the most part I can let you know of any pitfalls.

Interstate = autoroute, examples a-13, a-40
Route is like a slow highway, limit is usually 70 or 90 km/h, examples 'route 112' Boulevard = 2 way with median You coming through the 81? 89?

Norm I will be crossing at Sarnia and heading up lakeshore to CR 83 east to 23 and north to 9 east. At Mt Albert I will head north up to Lake Simco east to 12 south to 7 and east to Lindsay. Will spend the night there after doing about 400 miles the first day.

Don will look that route over. Away am replying on my phone for the moment. The 50 is a pretty quiet auto route, but you could drop down to the 148 for a more relaxed ride then get on the 323. Arriving at the 117 you are about 5-10 minutes from the motel. Riding along the north bound service road you just get on the 117 for a very short distance and exit onto ch du Lc Duhamel and ride along that for a couple of minutes to the lake side of the motel or continue on 117 for a bit more and access it by their parking lot directly on the 117.

You will enjoy your ride on #7 from Peterborough to Ottawa. Really nice stretch. Once you hit the 417 in Ottawa is where it goes down hill. High traffic, always construction and just a generally crappy place for a bike. Once you cross the river over into Quebec it gets much better. 20 kms through Ottawa but I guess that isn't too far.
