rear pinion seal
i have a friend that has a 2000 nomad and the rear pinion seal is leaking. i recently replaced the seal on my 2005 without a hitch. but his is completly different. it looks like it has a locknut that has to be taken out prior to getting the seal out. is this a left or right hand thread and can it be taken out with a hammer and punch or is there some special tool needed.

rear pinion seal
It is a LH thread on the lock collar.
I used a punch to remove mine, it does mark it up a bit but not bad. Make sure you loosen the small setscrew BEFORE tapping out the lock collar. I bought my seal at a local bearing supplier. It is a National seal 40x52x7 p/n703019 200608 Take a good look at the position of the old seal BEFORE you remove it from the lock collar. If the new seal rubs against the pinion bearing it will still leak, I found out the hard way and had to redo the job again. MAKE SURE it has a bit of space away from the bearing.
