Loops and rides
I read a post from CJ about maybe turning one ride Utah has planned out for us into a loop instead of "up and backs". I've never seen Lake Powell or the Glen Canyon Dam that spills into the start of the Grand Canyon and that's directly east of kanab. Might be an intersting Loop coming back north on the 67 and catching the 89a east after visiting the Lodge at the North GC lookout? There is a gas station right there.
Just thinking out loud. Like Bill had posted about Coral Pink state park. wondering if any/some/majority might want to conside turning some rides into a loop? Your thoughts? Brad

I won't be there so I should probably stay quiet but won't loops are generally more intersting than up+backs!

Yeah, I always prefer a loop over an "up and back" ride. After we leave GCNP. we head back the way we came. When we get to Jacob Lake, we would turn right and head east along the Vermillion Cliffs. At Marble Canyon (41 mi), there is a Chevron station/small store. Then we would cross Marble Canyon (400+ ft about the Colorado River) on Navajo Bridge. Great photo op! Once over the bridge, it's 14 miles to US-89 at Bitter Springs, and we would turn left and head North to Page, AZ (25.4 mi) where we cross Glen Canyon right next to the dam. There's Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made lakes in the country. From Page, it's 74 miles back to Kanab through the Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument. Total 155 miles.
From Jacob Lake back to Kanab the way we came it's 37 miles, so this loop adds 120 miles and a couple of hours, but it's well worth the trip for the amazing scenery.

Those who want to go straight back to Kanab can do so, if a group wants to take the loop through Page, I'm sure that's possible.

No.
It's 79 miles from Kanab to GCNP. Figure 158 miles round trip back to Kanab. The loop I outlined would be 79 Kanab to GCNP 42 GCNP to Jacob Lake 120 Jacob Lake to Kanab via Page/Lake Powell ----- 241 miles (approximately) or, roughly 90 miles farther than just the up and back route. They are pretty easy miles, too. Jacob Lake sits atop the Kaibab Plateau, and there's a few twisties as you drop down about 3,000' off the plateau. Then it's just some occasional big sweepers on the way back to Kanab. It's definitely not a grueling ride, by any means. Might be just a tad warm, given the time of year but it is high desert, nothing like Phoenix. It really is a nice ride with varied scenery, from pine trees and aspens on the Kaibab to high desert. You will see some of the most awe-inspiring vistas our great country has to offer. BtW, the area between Jacob Lake and the North Rim reminded me a lot of the Black Hills area. It would be interesting to see if others draw that conclusion as well.

If you do go to Page, don't miss Horseshoe Bend along the way. You have to hike off the road a bit, but the view is worth it.

i just realized that we traveled this route (Page - Kanab) to and from the rally in Cortez. It was a great ride, although traffic could be difficult on each side of Page. Looking forward to it.
