Help....Bike died on way home

Was coming home from work last nite when the bike (05 1600) just died like the key had been turned off. Everything was still on Lites, intrument panel. Just quit running. I've got a Power Commander so took seat off and unplugged it and reconnected the stock plugs, still nothing. Turns over just fine but won't start. Any suggestions?

Check the clutch safety wires, the kill switch, the green neutral light and the side stand switch.

Got gas?

Kill switch is ok and just filled it up with gas before it died. I'll check the other things tonite. It acts like it's not getting fuel. I was wondering if it could be the fuel pump?

Did it jerk and sputter to a halt, or did it just shutdown like someone turned off the key? If it was the latter, it probably is not the fuel pump.

Turn your ignition key on and off and listen for the fuel pump to buzz for a couple seconds. If you can't hear it check ignition switch and fuses, as well as what mac said,

Fuel pumps will usually give a warning before they go out. They start acting up and usually you would notice this. Sounds like you just lost fire. Not sure what would have caused that.

Sounds like I can rule out the fuel pump cause there was no warning or hiccups. Guess that's good news, really didn't want to spend $500 for a new one. Thanks for all the advice. Hoping to get it going for a trip this weekend.

Did you hear the pump buzz when you turn the key on?
And did you pull a couple plugs to verify that they have spark?

I am no mechanic but this sounds just like a problem my daughters car had......the "lifetime" fuel filter in the tank plugged up and needed to be replaced. Car just died on the interstate..very dangerous situation.

Has anyone had that problem with our in tank fuel filter? I assume annual Seafoam treatment would prevent this?

Really sounds like one of the safety kill switches closed.

I havn't heard of any fuel filter problems, and its uncommon to have the pumps fail, but not unheard of. Sometimes its as simple as picking up a tank of bad gas, with a lot of water in it.
That happened to a member here a couple seasons ago when we were out on a ride.

But even with bad gas it would have acted like the fuel pump. It wouldn't have just quit. He needs to give us a little more information on how it quit and all.

I can sure relate to your frustration Shoeroo.

I think Ring could be right as you say it started just after filling with gas. I had a similar issue a few weeks back that I have put down to bad gas. I filled up at a small off the beaten path gas station that in hind sight probably does not have a fast turnover on their high test. 30 km later the bike would misfire and stumble for a second and then be fine for a while. I dumped in some sea foam, cleaned my throttle body and checked over some of the more obvious electrical connections that night for good measure. The next day I topped up the tank and all was fine for a while and then the bike died at 70km/hr going down a hill. After puling over to the side of the road, the bike restarted with no problem and was fine for the rest of the day only stumbling once or twice more. I have since gone through two tanks of gas with no more issues, however I am continuing to monitor it and will continue to be cautious on corners and stay to the inside lane on express ways for a while longer just in case.

I had a very similar thing happen to me earlier this spring

Check all your fuses carefully, unplug clean and replug all electrical connections, and makes sure your battery AND PC3 are grounded correctly.
