Yamaha trunk on Nomad 1600
I have an opportunity to put a trunk off a Yamaha 1200 Venture Royale for my 1600 Nomad. So now I'm deciding whether I want to go that route. Anyone out there using that trunk? Thoughts pro and con? Did you make the key release work on your bike? Would you be willing to share pics?
Thanks in advance, Willie

Hey Willie
I'm not sure what year Yamaha you are talking about. I suspect its the early 80's version with the quick release mount but I could be wrong. This is a Venture trunk on my 1500. It is a early 90's version and does not have a detachable type mount. If its the earlier version, someone will come along soon with pics cause many have mounted them to their Nomads. :) Mike

Thanks Mike. Yours looks very nice. The one I'm talking about is indeed the older version, it doesn't have lens/reflector like yours does.

Yamaha trunk on Nomad 1600
Hi "RustyKnight" I had the 83 Venture trunk on my '06 at one time. I really liked it. Then I saw some members at the Custer rally with the Harley Davidson tour pak. It's so much larger than the Venture. An opportunity to buy a H.D. fairing and tour pak came my way, so I had to jump on it. I ended up selling it to someone with a Yamaha Star.
I fabricated my own rack and mounted it right to the rack first off, but the trunk cracked. So I ended up mounting the trunk to the rack using 4 alternator hangers. They absorbed any and all vibrations. Be careful with the Venture trunks, they are prone to get hairline cracks in the corners. Not all of them, but they had that issue. Lomax would be someone to ask about that. I'll post some photos of mine for you. The 2nd photo shows the side of the rack where it fit to the bike. You can also check out some of the old threads on this subject.

You might want to consider the H.D. trunk though. .........j.m.h.o. There are some good deals on eBay. Some need some work but you're going to paint whatever you get anyway ...probably.

Nomadliz and I have the 1200 trunks on our 08 Nomads. I built a rack for them using the quick detatch racks. The only problem with them is that the trunks rattle some on the orginal rack and I have not been able to stop it no matter how I adjust or shim them. If you have minimal welding skills building the rack is not a problem. I have the bikes kind of semi put away until better weather but I can get some detailed pictures and email them to you if you want them.

Thanks Watchman and Dennis. I was mostly looking for overall pictures, so I could see how the trunk looks on the bike in general. In Dennis's picture I can see that quite well, and I like the looks of it. I think I'm gonna go for the trunk. Thanks again, I appreciate how helpful you guys (and everyone on here !! ) are.

Yamaha trunk on Nomad 1600
I second the Wompus rack. I have an 83-84 Venture trunk on my 2006. Be careful of the trunks from that year range. Mine has stress cracks that are starting to show through the paint. The size and shape fits the bike well but if I were to do it over again I'd look for an early 90's venture trunk. They're a bit larger, still look good on the Nomad and will have ten years less age.

Here's another vote on the Wompus rack, and a photo of what my bike looked like several years ago with the late 80s/early 90's Venture trunk on it. I have since went with the HD Ultra Classic trunk.

You can't beat a Wompus rack, you should be able to mount whatever box you get for it with no problems at all.
