1600 or 1700

First i would like to thank all of you for the welcome. It is time to trade the 800a in on a new bike. So a new Nomad is in my near future, but now must choose between 08 1600 or the new 09 1700. I like both bikes but is a 1700 going to be worth the $1400 more. I assume dealers will be wanting to be rid of all the 1600's before the new ones hit the show rooms and will be willing to deal more on the 08's. Your thoughts please.

Tough choice, huh? Unless you really want a 1700cc engine, six-speed transmission and an electronic cruise control, I'd see what kind of deal you can make on an '08.

can get some sweet deals on holdovers. paid the same for my 07 holdover as i did for my 06. plus since i was a return customer, got a couple oil changes thrown in. get what ya can from the stealers! lol!

I would go for an 07 or 08 if you can find them. I got mine for $11k, it was an 07 and brand spanking new. Good deal on a great bike.

If it were me, I would book on down to Charlotte from East Tenn and grab this deal while it lasts. Brand new and I saw it on the showroom floor Saturday.

thanks for the input. trjam thats a good deal there in charlotte i have talked to the dealer in waynesville, nc where i bought my better 1/2's 900 classic last summer but none in stock but willing to find one but feel that it will take some of the deal out of the pic. any thoughts of what my 2000 800a might be worth? v&h straight shots new tires and less than 10000 miles. pic of this bike on VROC

I've seen new 08's on ebay for $9700, that's more than $1500 I would think. I really don't see dealers discounting very much when they don't have them yet. For $1500, I'd take the new one keeping in mind if I'm correct, it only has a one year warranty. ??? ??? ??? ???

They already have a lot of accessories for the 1600. So you might want to think about if you can dress it up the way you want with the 1700.

If I'm correct, the 1700 Nomad has a list of about $14500, and leftovers can be had for about $10K. From that standpoint alone I'd get an 08, but I am notoriously cheap. The bigger engine is worth something, but you can add enough performance mods to more than overcome that. Some may prefer the belt drive (I like the shaft) but scootworks can give you a belt if you really desire it. Cruise is nice, but can be achieved with a throttle lock. The six speed is a benefit, but I've been comfortable with the 5 speed. I do sometimes reach for "one more", but I suspect I'd do that with a 50 speed. The biggest factor is "do you like the look of the 1700? I am waiting to pass final judgment when I see one in person at the Cycle Show next weekend, but based on the pictures from the Kawasaki site, I don't care for it as much. The front half is fine, but the bags just loose me. It is the 1999-2008 style hards bags that are the biggest styling element of these bikes. The 1700 bags just look like aftermarket add ons to me. Kind of like the guys that buy the cheapies on Ebay and stick them on there 800's, sorry, it just isn't the same. In my humble opinion the 1600 Nomad will be the "high water mark" for the Vulcan line. It seems to be about as classic and timeless a motorcycle as Japan has ever made. Think about it, a ten year run (1998 early release-2008) with only slight modifications that lay below the beautiful skin. The only real visible changes were the stretched gas tank and the bigger passenger pillion and backrest of the 1600's. If you think about it, if it weren't for the different colors, you'd have a hard time telling a 1999 from a 2008. The 1700 is completely different, and to my eyes, not better. I hope not to offend anyone lusting after a 1700, nor those who will join after buying one. I'm just giving my opinion, and will be holding onto my 1600 for ever. My $.02 :)

True jasperboy, if i wanted to add any acc i would have to go to the dealer and pay ungodly high prices for them. i would be happy with the 1600 and as trjam has shown in the link from the charoltte dealer under $9000 for an 08. sounds like a great deal to me

Buy the '08 at a steal of a deal and let someone else work the bugs out of the '09. JMHO

I agree that the 98-08 1500-1600 Nomad is about the best bike that has ever been made. My own opinion is that I will keep mine and let everyone else work out the bugs on the '09 1700's, but I will be first in line to take one for a test ride nevertheless.

Welcome aboard Jackson. I am excited for you....not everyday that someone here is buying a new Nomad. If you are lucky enough to find a new 08 you can save a bundle of dough...I would think alot more than $1400.

If you buy an 08 you might consider a "New out of the crate" 07 or even 06 if you can find one, I believe thay are all pretty much the same.

Here is a link to a dealer in Oregon that advertises NEW 06 and 07's. The 06 two tone Green/Silver is only $9999! The 07 in black is $10,999.

I did not call them to confirm any details.

The extra power + torque of the 09 would be nice but after you read feedback from all of us here I think the smart thing is to wait until MaKaw works out any new "bugs". If you do buy the 09 I think the extended warranty is a must...but take a copy of the cheap ones off ebay when you go to negotiate...it should save you some $$$.
