Had a Scare This Morning

so yesterday was a big day for me...the Mrs decided she would climb onthe back of the Nomad, and ride. we had a scheduled trip/overnighter to biloxi, ms....2.5 hours if you ride the interstate (which we didn't do). we left the hose with another couple and all was uneventful. we got about 20 miles from home and there it was ...rain...got scared the Mrs would want to turn tail and run home and get the car...nope, this was just a superficial scare...

we started getting smatterings about the face and I thought to mysel - i didnt see that on the weather radar....as the smattering started to get heavier, we pulled to the side and put on our wal-mart rain gear and rode on...the Mrs being a trooper...we met up with 3 other couples and proceeded on...man - when did it start raining this hard? sunglasses with foam inner-rims filling up with water, getting into contacts-head tilted to the right to get glasses to empty out....getting hard to see, got a little tight and scared...but again just superficial scare.

ahhhh,,,look ahead, an opening in the clouds...off with the rain gear...crusin on - drying the rainsuit leakage, feet soaked. sun shining, this is better...cruisin at 70, 4 lane highway...ahhh yes...oh ch!t - the leader of the group has jammed on his brakes, the 2nd bike slammed on his brakes, i was late recognizing the tail lights (meaning i blinked) but i had a choice...lock her up or veer to the right of the lead bike who is wanting to go to the store on his right!!! i veered right side, put my headlight in his right mirror, hitting the brakes hard, but not to lock, he could see me in his mirror....i went by on his right as he came to a complete stop...couldda been ugly...scared ch!tless...yet still superficial...

remainder of the day uneventful...called in-laws to check on kids - all good, we arrive safe at hotel...blah blah blah,,,eat dinner, have a few beers, lose money to casino...go to bed.

0530 - phone rings, Okaloosa Sherrifs Office (from my home town)...Sir, your son is in the hospital...he has had a seizure and may be being transported to another hospital....scared, really scared.

Called the in-laws cell phone...Dane (our son) had started getting a fever yesterday afternoon, last night he was hot. he got ill and threw up. his grandpa laid him down on the couch and was comforting him and apply cold compresses to cool Dane off...Dane then laid still for a while and fell asleep till early this morning...he threwup again, with his grandpa there who ensured Dane did not choke, but then Dane seized and quit breathing. Grandpa grabbed Dane and ran to the bedroom, had grandma call 911, grandpa could not get Danes jaw open, had to get a spatula to pry open his jaw...he did...and applied cpr...Dane was breathing. ambulance ride, hospital, tests etc...

Derry and Laura throwing everything into bags...jump on the bike praying as we went. Looks like rain...not conducive to riding hard and fast. ugh...did i mention praying?

Rode into one little wisp of rain, and the remainder of the ride appeared to be "between" storm clouds...we kept missing all the rain, either it had just stopped raining or it was coming...but we did not get wet....tried to maintain 80 mph but had to keep check on the speedo - for some reason i kept having to slow from 95, No police sighted for the entire 2.5 hours...another miracle.

Along the way we stopped for gas...still scared...as i filled the bike, Laura called and got a status report...Dane was ok, negative swine flu, temperature coming down, diagnosis - fever induced seizure...dane was released and was home with the grandparents....Laura and I were releived, but still scared.

we got home, and there he was, lying with his grandpa nd sleeping..he is a little angel,,,we thanked God for his being "better" and continued to watch every breath he took....priceless.

i ran to the store to fill prescriptions and get him some gatorade and pedilite fluids...when i got back, he had woke up, looked around and was starting to play...

I am watching him now...he is playing with his cars....he is a Blessing.

Thank God he came out of it well. Sounds like your guardian angels put in some work for you on your ride back home as well.

First thought that came to mind was Swine Flu. Very happy to hear the test was negative. Sounds like all is well, thank God. Maye the next overnighter will go smoother Derry. Glad this one turned out OK.

Gosh Derry for some reason I thought this story was going to end not so well. (Heaven forbid) Kudos for the grandpa's and ma's !!! We forget how much they are still there for us many years after they were our mom's and dad's.

Praise God for being gracious to you and your son, for grandpa and grandma, and for your son having parents who love him, Derry!

So glad this all worked out okay man. I almost lost two of my sons when they were small. (long stories) God performed miracles for both of them and I am eternally grateful. Nothing will bring a man to his knees faster then threats of harm toward his children. Enjoy him. Hope he gets back to normal fast.

thank you to each of you for your thoughts and prayers....Dane (2.5) was playing cars earlier this afternoon....he has a fever (still) that appears to be hanging on...he is sleeping now, and I am watching him sleep nd breathe...

again, thank you - each of you for your continued prayers.

We had a "stop breathing" scare with our youngest when he was a toddler. You won't soon forget it and will find yourself listening for him breathing at night. Very scary!

I will keep your son in my thoughts and prayers. Seems as if the worst is over now. When times are tough and it seems we can't go on, Jesus is watching over us as he did you and Laura on your return trip.
