OK, all you Oregon experts, I've got a question for youse guys. After the Rally, my; wife and I will be returning to Boise via Crater Lake, because she hasn't been there since 1990, and doesn't remember a thing about it. It ought to be very nice up there about then. My question is, which is the better ride to see the lake, the east or west side drives? I've done both, but not the west side since 1990. Help me out here if you can. I'd sure appreciate it. Thanx in advance.

Greg

Hi Greg,

I have only been one way in & out of the lake (from the north). Netnorske (Kris) rode the south route so you might ask him.

I do know that I would avoid highway 97 if possible. It was not much fun and had alot of truck traffic.

You're right about Hwy 97, but unfortunately, we're pretty much out of luck there, by where we have to go. Just have to be extra alert on that stretch. At Redmond we will exit onto Hwy 26 for the rest of the way back.

That time of year it will be hot on the east side of the Cascades. You might want to consider bagging Crater Lake and take I-5 to Eugene (I hate i-5 but this stretch is one of the better stretches) take 126 to 242. 126 and 242 run along the Mackenzie River.....nice ride. You will end up in Redmond. This will keep you on the cooler side of the mountains for about 120 miles.

If HWY 97 is a must then take extra water breaks!

Won't be too bad. Still cooler than east of the rockies. Worst part of the run will be around Nevada and Utah on the way out.

As long as its under 100 its not too bad as long as you keep moving and drink water. In fact, might have to break out the thermal's for Crescent City with an average high of 66 for August.

Hey there ya'll. My son and I rode around the lake last year. He has a blog up of our whole trip with maps if you want..Oh yeah, and pic's as well. Got to check out the parking lot and walk up the path to the hole in the ground (well many holes) that appears to be the head waters of the Rouge River..And for sure get a ice cream at the small shop right next to the parking lot...Best ice cream and I ever had. Made right there and I have had my share from all over. Bring your bib because the cones are huge....Here is where the trip starts.. Crater lake was around day 10-12 I think.

Hi GregO, We live a couple hour ride from Crater Lake and a more pleasent ride from the rally would be ; Redwood Highway to Grants Pass, to Gold Hill, through Sams Valley to Eagle Point up Highway 62 to Crater Lake. This will put you at the South entrance. There is a gas station there if needed. The Rim Drive will be open by the time you're there and it's a nice ride all the way around the lake. Exit at the North entrance and hit Hwy 97. There is a LOT of truck traffic on 97 so be careful. Also pretty well patrolled so watch the speeds. Good places to eat are Becky's cafe on Hwy 62 and Diamond Junction cafe at Hwy 138/ 97 junction. Hopes this helps.

I'll agree to that... well I am between Crescent City and Crater Lake! I ride 97 a lot going to Bend to see my sis and mom, and its not as bad as it used to be. With more traffic and well patrolled the drivers seem pretty sane now, if that is possible.
Where are you at Lectricman? Medford area here.

GregO,
Did I miss something? I thought you guys were going to have to miss the rally....something about your daughter and grandkids visiting? Have your plans changed to include the Redwoods Rally? If so, that would be great.

BTW....Hwy 97 through southern Oregon totally sucks (WAY too much truck traffic)....I would pick any other route than that....
