New to KawaNOW ... LOOKING for a NOMAD

Hi

My name is Gregg and I'm from Simi Valley, CA

My wife used to ride a 500 Vulcan so I guess we qualify as past Vulcan owners. She now rides a V-Star 1100. I have several BMW's and just sold my Valkyrie Interstate

As much as I liked the Valk, the cylinders sticking out caused my 6'4" knees to be bent back too far. With the onset of arthritis in my right knee it became time for a change.

I have always admired the Nomad and at one point almost bought one to park next to the Valk. Now with the Valk gone and a big V-Twin with leg room on the horizon, the Nomad is my first choice.

I already have a 2000 model Nomad with 6900 miles lined up to look at next week, red and silver, a beautiful color combo. Any known weak points on the Nomads and the 2000 model year specifically. ANything special to look for when I go see this bike? I have advanced mechanical abilities, necessary when you run BMW's and won't pay what their dealers ask for service ($20.00 per quart oil comes to mind).

I look forward to hanging out here and thank you in advance for any advice.

The only thing I can think of on some Nomads is the POG, but I am pretty sure it was fixed starting with the 2000 model year.

Plastic Oil Gear. If you do a google search for Nomad POG you will seen tons of examples and warnings.

Welcome from Ontario, I think those bikes in 2000 came with both carbs or FI that year. Gadgets Nomad sight would give you a lot of help with what your looking for. There is a link to it from this sight that will get you there. I also think the tank capacity is a little smaller on those bikes over the 20002 and up models. If you do a lot of long rides this may be a slight drawback for you. Other than little things like that they are a very solid trouble free bike. Good luck shopping.

It has the steel oil gear and FI.

The only issue I know of is that with that color combo you'll always be trying to catch up to the silver & blue

Welcome to the Nomad Nation From the Grand Canyon State! The "POG" or plastic oil gear, was only used in the 1999 model year. In fact, other than normal age-related stuff, the POG is the only caveat in 10 years of Nomads (that I am aware of).

BTW, that Valkyrie is a beautiful bike! I like those.

Welcome aboard gregg. Love the Valk. Friends have one and it is a beautiful bike next to the Nomad. Nothing really to worry about with the 2000 other than normal wear and tear issues. One thing you may want to look into when/if you buy it is the swingarm grease. Also check around the gearbox to make sure there are no leaks as some people have indicated that if it is overfilled it will develop a leak.

I know what you mean about the leg position of the Valk. I rode my friends and I thought I was on the delivery table in the stirups.
