I see new dead deer just about every day in May. Today alone I must of seen 6 or 7. Two of which were not there yesterday.

I don't see too many around here until about October. They tend to stay in the fields and bush most of the time.

I saw a swamp donkey [moose] next to the road Sat. nite. Glad he wasn't coming into the road.

Yah, And they can put you it a rut as well.
I've seen a few moose over the years, and I have witnessed a few getting killed by cars or trucks. I live in the country so we have all the usual critters. The ones that scare me the most are the bears that come thru the yard about every other week.

Hit my first deer on a bike Monday morning going to work about 8am. Was riding my 2007 1600 Nomad. It ran across the road from the left and piled right into me just behind the front of the front wheel. I was doing about 50mph on a paved county road.
Didn't knock me down but bent up the front fender, brought the engine guard back at a 60deg angle, hit the back saddlebag guard and bent it back, and finally hit the left rear saddlebag. Somehow it didn't touch the windshield at all. The dealer says a new fender and saddlebag will probably be needed but they'll save as much as possible. Estimates about $1500 to repair. Luckily it didn't knock me over but it was a hell of a ride. I felt the deer brush by my left leg but the engine guard kept it off me. Knocked the sucker clear back across the road and killed it outright. The sheriff deputy said I was lucky, he's seen several of them just come up and over and sweep the rider off. Never thought I would be happy that bike is *so* heavy but it sure helped in this situation! Took a good 20 minutes to stop the shakes. Hope it never happens again! |

Wow, that was a close one! Glad you are Ok. I haven't hit anything bigger then a rabbit with a bike. Lucky for me. In my cars and trucks I've hit too many deer. Stay safe, ride long...

Wow upside22, that must have been one hell of a ride. Glad you were not taken off the bike, would have been much worse. I haven't had the misfortune of hitting anything while riding, but did have a very large tom turkey bounce off of my shoulder last season.

Glad you're alright "upside".
Sounds more like the deer hit you. At least that's what I say when I tell the story about when one hit me and my wife on my Venture when I had it. I have told this story more than a couple of times here on the forum so my apologies to those who have heard this before. We were on the Queen Charlotte Islands { now called Haida Gwaii} , beautiful day,.. when a doe came up from the shore line, trotted beside us for about 2 seconds, tried to get in front of us and hit us. She took out the frt. wheel and took us down. My wife went off the bike, I stayed with it as it went down and pushed myself away when I was sliding. Yes I always said that because the bike was as big as it was, it's part of the reason we made it out alive. I later determined that the deer in fact didn't cross in frt. of the bike but jumped between the windscreen and myself. There was a hoof print on the side of the fuel tank that stayed up, and there was a lot of deer $hit on the inside of the windscreen. I consider myself very fortunate to be alive and to be able to tell the story. $hit happens!!

You're a very fortunate man. Could have been much worse.

I just missed a deer in the car yesterday morning. As it ran across the road about 30 feet in front of me it fell on the wet asphalt and then stood up and took off just as we passed it.
Had I been on the bike it could have been a different ending. |
