Magnetic tank bags. Pros cons?

Thinking about some extra storage on my 06 nomad for smalls like glasses, keys phone etc and maybe a map or three. Not really into gps on my bike. Chime in.

I bought this one by Nelson Rigg. Great bag. Well made. Easy on/off and held my hydration bladder w/3 liters of water and lots of other stuff when the bladder was not in use.

I just don't like having a bag in front of me. The bag would accidently hit the horn when moving the handlebars in slow speed maneuvers. It was also a minor inconvenience when refueling. I have used it once but would be surprised if I use it again. But you never know, especially when you ride 2 up and are looking for all the storage you can find.

There is one benefit to those bags.

The magnetic field caused by them, being on the gas tank, should help increase your fuel mileage about 1 1/2 to 2 more MPG.

Doesn't it draw all the go fast molecules in the gas to the top of the tank affecting acceleration?

They will scuff up the paint over time as well.

That's what I was worried about.

Not for me. I have a console that runs down the top of the tank, and I wouldn't want the bag damaging my paint, either.

The tank bag that I used would leave material marks in the paint where every magnet was... They are great to have but can cause finish issues

You can solve the problem with marring the paint by putting the magnet in the tank. Plus the gas mileage would increase by 2 to 2 1/2.

Yep might have to settle for a bib. Tank bib that is.
Might only get 1 to 1 1/2 mpg better consumption tho.

windshield bag

Hello Muz,
I have a tank bag that I got from ShadeTreePowersports.com about five years ago. I always use it when touring, because of the convenient map pocket on the top. Comes in very handy for a quick look at the map. I have had no issues with scuffing the paint. Just make sure to keep the area clean, and take care not to slide it when taking it on or off the tank.
I also have a windshield bag that I use a lot for the things you mentioned like sunglasses and keys, and a kickstand plate. Also very handy, and no issues with scuffing. It's from Shadetree too.
Both bag types can be ordered from catalog vendors, or there are many on E-Bay as well.
I think you can never have too much storage, and am considering adding a trunk to my Nomad as well as having the bags.
I haven't noticed any change in fuel consumption when using the tank bag, but I do find that I am able to use the magnets to change traffic lights from red to green! Very handy. Next, how about some deer whistles too.
