Shifting problems
I have a 2008 Vulcan Nomad with 31000 miles and I have always had a slight lagging in fifth gear at 70 miles per hour. By lagging I mean at 70 mph giving full throttle it almost acts as if an automatic transmission was slipping. I know that is not possible - this is just my way of explaining my problem. ???
Does anyone else experience this? Just a note that when easing on the throttle in fifth gear at 70 mph, this lagging effect that I call it is not a factor. Just when giving it full throttle. If anyone has experienced this or has any explanation, I would certainly be happy to hear from you. Thank you in advance. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

At that mileage, could be the clutch spring, but should show symptoms at other speeds too, with enough acceleration. Try it on a steep hill, if you have one.

The clutch spring is the only part that can make the bike feel that way, unless your not making power and the bike has a hard time accellerating from that speed. How are the plugs and air filter?

My guess is your clutch spring is slipping. It's not unheard of at that mileage. I replaced mine at around 22k.

Bogging down or revving up and going nowhere? If it bogs or just plain sluggish I would suspect fuel management. Air, fuel or both. Where are you located?

How does it accelerate from 70 in 4th gear? If that is strong, then what you are feeling isn't the clutch - it's just that 5th gear is pretty tall. <my guesses come with a money back guarantee>

If you hear the engine revving and you aren't accelerating it is probably the clutch spring getting weak.

Yes we need to know if the engine is revving but the bike doesn't accelerate. In that case it will be the clutch. If it just doesn't seem to have power in fifth gear then it is something else. Such as spark plugs, breather or as Skeeter said air/fuel. Hope we have helped you some. Get back to us and let us know what you have figured out.

Logged in on the 6th. Must have forgotten about us. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a big sign at the top of the page reminding us what threads we have participated in?

Maybe his job takes him away for lengths of time where he is not at a computer.
