bafflectomy help (updated)

??? Watched the video and read the instructions.

Appears the hole saw cut through the weld but I can't get the baffle out. :( Before I attempt the other side, any advice please.

Thank you..

bafflectomy help (updated)

Joe, Be sure the weld is cut completely through. Grab the end of baffle lip tightly with a pair of vice grips and try to twist it back and forth while pulling. You probably have some carbon buildup and a little rust film that is holding the baffle where it slides into the upstream pipe. It slips into another pipe at least 1". Get it turning a little and it will slide out. I had the same problem on one side. If that won't get it, you can always get a piece of all thread, a few nuts, and fender washers, and a pipe nipple to fabricate a home made slide hammer to pull it. I don't think you will have to go that far though.

bafflectomy help (updated)

Mine came out easy, but some others had to grab the lip of the baffle with a pliers or vise grips and rotate some to break it loose then pull it out. Might also have to try bumping it in some to get it loose, then pull it out. Those with real hard ones had to use a slide hammer to get it started. Hope this will help, I'm sure someone else will be along soon to give more advice if this doesn't work. Good luck! You'll like the sound when you're done!!

bafflectomy help (updated)

Update guys...
So I try the other side and the same problem.
guess I have a partial bafflectomey :)

Stated it up and nicer sound and no rattle.

so.....

After touching it up with paint I'll leave it as is. Maybe the heat and back pressure of riding will loosen it.

Don't ride behind me on the interstate, sort of like a torpedo flying out the back.

Got to have a sense of humor to relieve the frustration. Maybe a good forum member can look at it if they are still in at the National Rally.

Thanks for the help..Joe

Start the bike up and get the mufflers hot. Steel expands when it gets hot, it may loosen things up. Grab onto the baffle with vise grips and rotate the baffle back and forth while pulling toward you.

Joe, After clamping the vise grips good and tight, rap on the side of the vise grips with a small hammer while twisting back and forth. They will come out. Try it as CJ said with the mufflers hot.

If you are using a vise grips clamp it as tight as you cann and rap on it with a hammer pushing the baffle into the muffler. Don't go swinging at it like an axe just some short raps. This may help it give.

While working on heavy equipment I always found that to loosen a stubborn nut or bolt sometimes it helps to tighten it ever so slightly then it will come off.

That slide hammer gets it every time. It's the ultimate man tool.

Going to ride in the morning. Figure the heat and vibrations may shake them loose. Maybe when I return home they'll be gone.. We'll see...

bafflectomy help (updated)

I did mine last year. The bike is a 2000. It took a little more than light taps with a hammer to work them out. Ran them good and hot then vise grips and a bunch of twisting and hammer hits to the pliers. I wish I had a slide hammer. As long as the weld is cut, they will come out.

bafflectomy help (updated)

good day all, I have a 2001 vulcan classic 1500, its dressed up as a nomad. I want to do the bafflectomy on it. how much better/worst does it change the sound? I don't want it loud like a 50-50 but a nice rumble..

thanks

You do realize you're going to end up buying aftermarket pipes anyway, right? ;)
