2005 Ford F150
I'm looking at purchasing a truck. I originally wanted a smaller truck, for fuel economy purposes, but I have come across a great deal on an F150.
It's a 2005 XL, 2wd, with 75K miles for $5,000. I test drove it today and it felt like a new truck. The owner bought a few of them for work trucks, but his company went out of business and he's is tring to sell off what assets he has left. I understand that people are partial to their brand of trucks, but I want to know some unbiased pros and cons about f150s. Another option that I've been considering is an 2004 Ranger.

Not a real fan of Ford's but just a thought. A company that I used to work for bought one similar to the truck you're considering, it spent more time in the shop than it did on the road. In its defense though several people drove it, so there's no telling what kind of abuse it was put through. If I were you, since this was a company vehicle, I would request to see the service records for it. Other than that, it appears to be a fairly nice looking truck and not a bad price at all.....

Like Moose said, get ahold of the service record. Other than that, Ford for me has been the best trucks. I've had Chevy, Dodge and Ford. Ford has been the best as far as being reliable. The truck that I currently have is a 93 F150 with 215,000 miles on it and I have yet to touch the engine. The only major repairs have been 2 clutches (manual) and 3 alternators and 3 starters. I do have an oil leak at the valve cover gasket but I don't know if I want to spend 3 hours on it to replace it for what it is leaking.

Doesn't seem like a bad price. Mine is a 2003 with nearly 150,000 miles, no major work needed, and the only trouble I have had was a bad coil on one plug. Puling a 28 foot trailer back and forth to SC from OH and not one issue though I wouldn't tow anything much heavier than I am.
If you plan on hauling anything or pulling anything... do go with the 150 over the ranger. Similar gas mileage in both and the 150 just feels so much better than either of the rangers I have had. Sister is kicking herself in the butt getting a Ranger instead of a 150. Good luck! Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Ask for the CarFax. I would think in your area you would be looking for a 4 wheel drive.

There is a reason the f150 is the all around best selling truck in America!
At 5K, you could get twice that if you sold it in parts to bodushop. Ford all the way for pickup truck |

The F150 has a good reputation. Ford says it is the best selling truck. For that year $5000 isn't bad at all.

I have had Ford, Chevy, GMC,and Dodge.
Ford is the only truck I will own now. My F150 is 4x4 and I plow with it. It is a 2007. Now if I were to buy a truck from a fleet I would be very careful. Everybody in the company may have driven it and it is not their truck so they may have been rough on it. As someone else said, ask to see the service records. You may want to ask if you can take it to your mechanic so he can check it out.

Ford F-150 is the bestselling vehicle in America and it has been the best selling truck for over 30 years. There is a reason for this, it’s the best truck. I put over 300,000 on my F 150 and it was still running same transmission and engine with no major problems. When I sold it the steering box was worn out but hey it had over 300 k miles.

i had a 2006 ford ranger which was a piece of junk.i had a 2008 and now have a 2010 f150,both of which have been trouble free and i like them alot.the down side of the truck you are looking at
is the fact that is not 4-wheel drive.here in wyoming it would be useless at times in the winter.

Here is an article on used trucks. It has the Ford F 150 with the highest JD Powers dependability of all the brands including the foreign brands of Honda, toyota and Nissan and Dodge being the worst. Hope this helps.

In addition to my 1992 F150 Supercab that still runs great, I had a 2005 F150 Super Crew that I sold in order to buy Lucille. I had no issues with it other than one coil pack went bad in the year and a half that I had it. Otherwise it was a champ.

I ran a carfax report on the truck and it was in an accident back in 2008. The truck wasn't totaled and it appears as though the accident only cause cosmetic problems which have all been fixed. I will take a closer look at the area where the accident happened to make sure the work was done well.

With the knowledge from the carfax, you might be able to get them to lower the price.
