Itinerary for Cortez - Update

Here is a short itinerary that I have come up with for the rally. Look it over and see what you think.

The routes for two rides are in a thread below.

Sunday – Meet and greet for those who have made it to Cortez on Sunday.

Meet up around 6:00 p.m. and then go to eat at a local restaurant. Blondies Pub and Grill
www.blondiespubandgrub.net

Monday – I am thinking that since many of the people may have had a long day of riding to get here.
9:00 a.m. Meet-up. Mesa Verde Ride – Ride to Mesa Verde National Park. Entrance fee is $8 per person.
http://www.nps.gov/meve/index.htm

Dinner meet at 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Go to J. Fargo Family Dining and Micro-Brew.
www.jfargos.com

Tuesday – San Juan Loop Ride – Meet up at 8:45 a.m. and KSU at 9:15 a.m. Return by 5 to 6 p.m.

Dinner Meet at one hour after returning. Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant. (just 3 blocks from the Budget Host)

Wednesday - Four Corners Run - Meet up at 8:45 a.m. and KSU at 9:15 a.m. Return by 5 to 6 p.m.

Dinner – Meet up one hour after returning. Location – the group can decide.

Thursday – Meet and greet for farewells. Breakfast? There is a Denny’s next to the Budget Host.

Looks good to me. One question though. Which way are you going to do the San Juan Loop. Clockwise or Counterclockwise? The reason I ask is that we are leaving Tuesday Morning for Gunnison and will be taking Hwy 550 to Montrose and it would be great to get in half the loop with the group.

Or we will just look for you coming South and wave when we pass each other.

Stan, that is up to Pronghorn. He has said he would lead the ride.

All I'm leaning toward leading the San Juan loop clockwise out of Cortez with the Millon Dollar Hwy. part going uphill, I think it is a little better ride going up. Both ways are an outstanding, scenic and different ride. I usually ride it both ways every year and enjoy both. Also you have an option to ride it the other direction on one of the other days. Really so much to see and ride around that area that 3 days is not enough time to do it all.

After getting some more information, Mesa Verde road is a mess and the four corners monument is closed for construction. They didn't have this on their webpage earlier. Do to this we are changing our itinerary for those 2 rides.

We are proposing a ride up to Moab and visit arches national park (around 280 miles roundtrip). Another will be monument valley (CJ's suggestion).

Thanks Bill. I sent them an email a week ago and haven't heard anything back from them yet.

Monument Valley and The Arches will be great. Can't get too close to much at Monument because it is under private control, but the roadside scenery is fantastic, it a SW sort of way. Arches is very popular

My only dilemma regarding the Arches ride is that our group (Jared, Tombstone, myself, et al) will be coming to Cortez from that direction and will ride though Moab right past Arches NP enroute to Cortez from Utah.

That means after arriving in Cortez.... we would have to ride back to Moab, then back to Cortez again.....then back to Moab on our return trip home. I'm not too excited to see the same road that many times... !

I love this idea! Arches is one of my favorite places on earth and I've never been to monument valley.

Jared and Kris,

There are a couple of side roads that will get us away from 50-60 miles of the same route. Some portions are unpaved but I will see how much of it isn't.
