Vulcan Voyager rpm

Hello Folks,

Could you guys please tell me the behavior of your Vulcan 1700 for these three scenarios?

This is for my Vulcan Voyager 2022 (stock).


1. Idle rpm:
- Once the engine is fully warmed up, the rpm will stay stable and drop down 50 rpm every 10-15 seconds, regardless of the idle settings.

2. Holding the clutch at high rpm:
- If I accelerate the bike to higher rpm (like 2000 rpm or above ) and then hold down the clutch, the rpm will drop below idle and then bounce back up.

3. Hot start rpm:
- When restarting with a hot engine, the bike will fire right up, then drop the rpm below idle for a second and then maintain idle usually.


Thank you so much for your guidance. This is my first V-Twin, and I am unfamiliar with its behavior (I only have experience in inline-four engines).

In addition to the above post:

- My bike never stalls in any of these scenarios.
- For the idle rpm, there is not that much swing, but I could hear the engine rpm difference (just slight rpm needle fluctuates).

Try cleaning the butterflies, located behind the right side engine air intake cover. Use a toothbrush and Seafoam spray. Also a lint free rug works. Spray the butterflies and the intake plenum, open the butterflies and go deeper, and brush or rub all surfaces until clean and then repeat once again.

Also is it something that started lately or the whole time you have had the bike? Throttle cables too tight can cause this. Turn your handle bars side to side and see if that effects the rpm. What rpm does the tach show with normal idle?

Thank you for your message and guidance.

Turning a handlebar does not affect the rpm. The rpm is around 900 per the manual.

Maybe it is just the V-Twin's behavior, which I may have expected too much, that the idle rpm should not move at all.

I am not sure if it has happened lately or not. I did not pay too much attention when I first got the motorcycle (I bought it brand new at 1 mile, and it is currently around 1800 miles after one year).

Yep, what they said! Also, how many miles on bike? Whens the last time you serviced your bike? Your bike have any mods?

There could be a few things other than what they said, but these guys have alot of experience with these bikes....try they're suggestions first....

My 2011 1700 abs voyager idles correctly most of the time.

On hot days the idle goes up to almost 2,000 rpm, and the same issue occurs on cooler days.

Sounds like a faulty sensor? It happens randomly, and creates very dangerous driving conditions.

Has anyone had this problem?

The bike has 1800 miles so far (I bought it brand new last year; I opted to buy the 2022 due to the color). I serviced it for the first time early this year (600-mile service). The bike is all stock. I will find time to clean the butterflies.

It fluctuates very minimally, like 50 rpm at idle.

Does the idle fluctuate to 2000 rpm only when the bike first starts (when the engine is cold) or does if fluctuate even when the bike is idle when it has been running (engine is hot and still running)?

This problem occurs after the engine has warmed up and been running.

Yea, that sounds like dirty throttleblades....usuall, you have to grab the throttle idle knob and idle it up when you pull up to a stoplight....
There are some sensors that can affect your idle, it doesn't hurt to clean them when you service your bike.
