Backfiring
I put a set of V&H on the other month. I love the sound but when I'm on it in first going to second or second to third it backfires like a shotgun going off. Anyone else experience this? I can live with it but was wondering if anyone has found a cure.

I get a hard roll of cackel, but no backfire. Dave is asking a question I would ask too... Fire up a ciggy butt and hold it near the head pipes and other joints in the system, and see if the bike inhales... I mean it, see if the bike disturbes the smoke plume..
What is the intake and other engine mods like on this bike. I have errr the cadman Kit and a TFI, plus Baggers... No backfing at all.. Next suggestion have you cleaned the throttel body recently? green 06 nad... here

Everything is completely stock guys. I'm going to do some mods and eliminate the air plumbing this winter. I'll try the smoke thing like mac said. Iget alot of cackle but a good shotgun blast every now and then.

All stock huh, that ain't right fer sartin... Test with smoke at the goat bladder too. Look for carbon tracks as well. Some where there has to be excess air entering the exhaust ahead of the last exit. A 12 ga like blast is not a good thing to suffer.

Beez; It sure sounds like an exaust leak if it backfires.
Check to see if there is a hairline crack forming at the first bend of the rear cylinder, where it exits the exaust port, this is where the V&H pipe will crack if its going to. I doubt thats the problem with your pipes being so new, but it wouldn't hurt to check. Also the acorn nuts could be loose at the exaust port, sometimes you have to put a washer underneath the nut to snug up the gaskets. My front pipe was leaking there and it took about three attempts to get it to seal properly. Do not overtighten to much, because you will bend the flange, I know this from experience.

Also, could be leaking around the crush gaskets...you may be able to correct that with the steps the others have already mentioned.............don't know if they were replaced or not when you switched to V&H......if I remember correctly, they do not come supplied with the new pipes......

I'd do the marble thing first beez. Plug that air hose and see if the popping diminishes..

If you can't find a marble, you can do what I did and go to ACE Hardware and buy a neoprene cork that fits nicely in the air hose.

Thanks guys. I'll have to look into it further this weekend. I didn't put new crush gaskets on because every Kawi dealer around had to order them and I was pressed for time to meet up with Ringdingh, chawneyboy and Ole Dawg the next day.

Of course if he has baggers on there is no goat bladder.. Either way the smoke test may help.. If it is baggers, then at the least it should be Marbalized.. being a bit lost, it should have new gaskets when new pipes go in. It is possible to cheat though, and I did, so have a set of new gaskets for next time the V&H baggers come down. The Baggers flanges are thinner too, and so there needs to be a flat washer there. When you snug baggers up it should be done evenly.. To do baggers there is a pretty long method to type. To shorten that, you install everything loose, and then tighten the mufflers first, after making sure everything lines up, and gets a good stiff shake. Next comes the clamps if you use them, with another shake first. Last is the flanges. This will help reduce stress, which may or not reduce cracking head pipes.
