Nomad 1700 wiring diagram
I'm trying to hard wire my Garmin GPS into the wiring in the headlight. Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for this bike? I would like a positive that is on with the accesssory switch. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Probably the only source of a wiring diagram for the 1700's at this time will be to purchase a service manual directly from Kawasaki. It's $74.95.

I have my Zumo 550 wired into the accessory connectors in the headlight. If you haven't looked in there yet...remove the headlight rim, 2 screws, wrap the rim in a cloth because its going to hang down from the headlight against the fork tubes. There are 2 female connectors that you can't miss, one positive (yellow wires) one negative (black/yellow wires) Each will take 2 male connectors so you could wire 2 devices in them. Make sure your GPS will operate on 12 volts, buy the male ends at Radio Shack, in my case I put them on the ends of the standard power lead that comes with the Zumo 550, run them through the back end of the headlight bucket, plug 'em in and voila, a power source connected to the ignition switch.
The connector package from Radio Shack says. Crimp-On Snap Connectors Part No. 64-3086 Pkg of 10 The fuse box under the seat has a labelled Acc fuse of 15 Amps but I also wired in a cigarette lighter which even comes with an inline fuse of 15 amps but it blew the under seat fuse immediately so I hard wired that directly to the battery. Also there are 2 acc. connectors under the seat but have different colored wiring for positive/negative (see page 64 in the owners manual.) You probably want more info than that but I thought "couldn't hurt to mention the experience of a guy who struggles to replace a light bulb." |

Thanks for the info. I was trying to save that connection for a light bar. But until I can get a diagram so I know where to tap in to I guess that will have to do.. Thanks again.

Putt,
Are the accessory connections in the headlight bucket and under the seat on the 1700's only hot with the ignition switch on? If so, that's a change since on the 1600's they are hot all the time, not switched.

Hi Bob
Yep both sources are made hot off the ignition switch. Had to go out to check the rear ones, I hadn't tried them yet. :) Got 'er all done just in time, leavin' on a trip to Canada Wednesday if the east coast isn't under water by then. Took a shakedown cruise today, testing out the GPS/Scala connection, checkin' to see if that windshield keeps my cigar from gettin' wet (it does) so, good to go, load up my unmentionables and my rain suit and on the road again. |

You can use a test light to find a switched power wire also, you can use a circuit that has very little load on it, such as the tailight, or front markers.

Thanks for the replies. I have it hooked in to the headlight accessory connection but I think a tap would be better. When I have time to mess with it further I'll use waterproof taps.
