Just got the FI2000 installed and need gas. My 07 is stock with debaffled pipes, goat intake. Should I try 87? Cobra settings seemed best on 3-4-0, but could be a 2-4-0, hard to tell. Ran OK last nite, no pinging on 93.

I would try a tank of 89 first and listen for any pinging. If it pings running 89 it surely will with 87.

I usually run a tank of 93 and then the next fill up I will put in 89. That way the tank always has at least 90 octane in it which Kawasaki recommends. The last fill up I did put in the 87 but I only do that on rare occassions. Premium doesn't cost but about $1.00 more per fill up and that is if you buy 5 gallons.

Since installing the intake mod and aftermarket pipes, I've been running 87 octane exclusively. Don't hear any pinging and it runs like a scalded dog.

cocheese72..I'm about the same as you, debaffled pipes, Hypercharger air intake and 2.5-4-0 on the Cobra. I am working my way down in Octane. Just ran two tanks of 89 and no issues. Will go to 87 on the next tank. Wanted to run more than one tank at a time so I could evaluate over most if not all riding conditions.

It ran good for most of the ride today on 87, but started pinging 30+ miles in, maybe due to the bike getting hotter as it idled and I messed with it. I need to tweak it some more up up the octane.

It beats me why the cobra unit doesn't increase base idle rpm. Did that happen or not with your bike? I wionder about Cj's bike too? My Tfi installs raise idle to high off base idle and before i can trim the tfi more I have to reduce idle with the black air knob. Like you I run 87 only, no foolin around with mid grade fuels. My mix is set and the engine has all it wants.

Mine did nothing from 1 - 10 on pot 1 while idle. Cobra instructions state:
Start with the left hand or green light pot. This adjustment works either from idle or above idle (varies with bike) to a R.P.M. of about 5000 (also varies with bike) while the bike is driven at a steady throttle or slowly increasing throttle. This is the cruise range and is where the emissions leanness creates issues like choppy on-off throttle application, surging, and backfiring on trailing throttle. Turn this pot back to zero, and make one position increases until you feel the best performance in this range. Do this test a few times to make sure you have it right.

Mac, I have the Cobra and awhile back we had a long thread going about the idle adjustment on Pot 1. It does appear that the Cobra has no effect on mixture until 1500 to 1800 rpm. This varies with bike but is the way it works.
With this being said I'm beginning to feel the Techlusion TFI would be a better unit for the Nomad. As very lean idle is a major issue causing the motor stalls, hic-up's, surging, etc. The Cobra does not appear to help in the very low RPM range. While, from what I've read on the form, the Tecklusion does! While I do feel the Cobra has greatly improved the ridability of my bike I still experience the motor stopping when the clutch is dumped and the idle is allowed to drop to low. Other than that all is good. If I ran across a deal on a Techlusion TFI I'll probally get it to compare. |

Mac, I don't have a tach but my fast idle rpm increases significantly while adjusting TFI pot #1. Highest idle appears to be at around 3:45 on pot 1. I was able to bring it down from 4:00 to about 3:30 with no ping on 87 after opening up the intake. The V&H pipes were in place a couple of weeks before the Chuckster dual plate intake mod. Has to be the increase of cooler air that stopped the pinging. I've run 87 for the last 10 or more tanks with no pinging issues. Pot #2 is at 6:00.

If I grabbed the Chuckster intake, would it help, or will the debaffled exhaust still need to be replaced?

It would help. For one you'd be introducing cooler air and two, the air temp sensor would be sending that cooler air info to the ECU to add fuel...
Just be ready to hear a logrithmic increase in intake noise.

Does the left intake become useless or are they still tied together?

One more question. Is the single or dual about the same in terms of air? Is one better? I think I prefer the stock dog bowl for looks and cheaper filter.
