In Washington for a couple of months

I'm in Richland,Wa until June with the exception of the last 2 weeks of March and the first week of April. If the weather clears up and the roads stay clear I'll be trying to get in as much riding as I can while I'm here.
Any suggestions on "must see" trips?

Wandering Nomad! You are long ways from home my friend, but welcome to the Pacific NW!

Pretty much all of Washington is a must see, but Mt. St. Helens is right up there. There is a great road that heads east from I-5 and goes right up to Johnstone Ridge. Awesome on a nice day!

Certainly you should try to make the Hwy 101 loop around the Olympic Peninsula. Later in the summer Hwy 20 over the North Cascades is a must ride...but June might be a tad early for that (but maybe not). July, August and September are better for that. Same goes for a ride up the Mt. Baker hwy to the top.

I am planning a three day ride over Memorial Weekend down through Hell's Canyon Idaho from May 23-25. On Saturday May 23rd we will be coming right by Tri-Cities (Richland) on our way down.

You are certainly welcome to join us if you like, we would love to have you along. Sunday May 24 will be a spectacular ride chock full of twisties, rivers, and two Snake River dams. We will start from Enterprise, OR and end up in Orofino, ID (about 300 miles). Monday the 25th we head home and you could head back to Richland.

Let me know if you are interested and I will send you my ride plans and the Best Western motels we are booked at for the trip. If you can't make it for Memorial Weekend....maybe you could ride over here for a couple days and we could do a putt around here.

Check out this link for everything you need to know about Washington rides...this site is awesome! It's maintained by a Gold Wing rider and has simply tons of good stuff. You will enjoy it immensely...

Cheers....Kris

Rick...Welcome to Washington.

The Columbia Gorge is always scenic but can get windy. I think Netnorske (Kris) has you headed in the right direction. Hells Canyon is supposed to be awesome. I think the west side of the Cascades has the most scenic rides (more rain and greenery) but if you stay near water you will find some great roads on the east side as well. Check out the Harley Davidson website....you can learn alot from the satellite view. Here is the link http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/C...P6kGLhmnrXvh2p!-126472536!2005081819&locale=en_US

Obviously you brought the bike....did you trailer or ride? Where are you staying? When in Richland I usually stay at the Hampton Inn on the river...nice views. There is a small Casino in Pasco called the Crazy Moose Casino....good food.

If I make a trip up before you leave I will PM you ahead of time...maybe we can meet up?

Greg

Thanks for the info guys.
Yes,I brought my bike. I trailered out here because I couldn't get everything here that I need for a 2 month stay.I left SC in Dec,spent a few days in NM riding the area(going back this spring)then spent 2 months in Pismo Beach,Ca,now I'm here in Washington. I'm staying with my brother at his apartment so I have a semi-secure place to park my bike.
Going to play golf today, but I plan on getting out to Mt Rainier next weekend.Mt St Helens is definately on the list.
I would love to make the ride to Idaho with you guys, but since I am here to work,I'll have to see if my schedule will allow it.
See you on the road.Ride safe.

If you ride to Mt St Helens let us know...I may join you. I live closer than everyone on this board and lived here when it blew....got lots of ash dropped on me...but I have never been up there in cage or on bike.

I have only done it once (about 1998), but it is absolutely awe-inspring! You can see as you ride up the valley how much the volcano filled it in....and the trees that are all laid over (if they are still there) are a very strange sight and it's difficult to get your head around the kind of force that could do that...

Let me know too....I might want in on that ride myself.....!

I'm going home for a few weeks in March, but I'll be back April 16th.I would enjoy getting together and riding up to see Mt St Helens.
Maybe someone could suggest a central meeting point and a group ride up ?

This sounds like a great idea! I'll bet BigJohn would like to get in on this too (and probably a few other friends as well). How about we shoot for Sunday May 3, with an alternate date of Sunday May 10 if the weather sucks on the 3rd. Those dates work for me as I have no conflicts those weeks.

Hwy 504 is the road that leads up the valley to the Visitors Center at Johnstone Ridge. It starts at I-5 @ the town of Castle Rock. There appears to be what looks like a restaurant just east off the exit that I have marked in the photo below.

This would be a great place to meet since we will be coming from different directions. We could plan to meet there around 10:00am give or take. We could stretch the legs, maybe get a cup of coffee....then head up that incredible road! What do you guys think?

UPDATE: I will start a separate thread for this ride.

Wandering,
Great to have you out here. If you have the time, ride Hwy. 101 around the Olympic Peninsula and then down to Oregon. Based on how much time you have, you can go further south and then sprint up I-5.

Also try looking at going over the I-90 pass and check out the city of Leavenworth, WA.

I'll see you at the Mt. St. Helen's ride,
Rich

How far are you from the Sumas Canadian Border??
I'm close by there in Kendall at "my cabin". I should be riding soon Rick. I had some knee surgery done a while back if you didn't already know or read it here. Let me know and we'll hook up if possible

Oh WOW !!! I just had a look and you're a ways away from me. Seattle is two hours from where I'm at. { approx.} It looks like you might be close to that yourself Rick.
