I blew it out with air, sloshed it around in soapy (Dawn) water, let it soak for a while, rinsed it with low flow of water, then soaked it a few minutes in clean water and set aside to dry. Once dry I inspected it and saw no change in the material. I put it back on the engine and put on about a thousand miles. It runs fine. I removed it to inspect it at about 500 miles and it looked normal.

Heh, just had a thought. "Dry" Cleaning an air filter kind of like dry cleaning clothes. Using a solvent (like Kerosene) to dislodge the dirt and blow it out with compressed air to clear the solvent from the filter element.
I just use a K&N filter element because it is washable with Dawn soapy water, then air dry and finally blow out with compressed air to clean it.
