chips on bags from road debris

Does this happen to the bags or scuff marks from the passengers boots? If so then I might consider some rear guard chaps or at least some 3-M protective film.

Yes it does. Not so much my passenger but I hit them with my heel if I'm not real careful getting on and off the bike.
Chaps is probably the way to go if you are worried about it. I tried putting a film on but I couldn't get it to go on without wrinkles or bubbles in the end result. Of course it could have been just me. you may have better luck :-/

I get boot marks all the time on my right side bag. Polishes off without any issue.

I thought mine were scratched pretty bad, but a little wax took the scuff marks right off.

Does anyone know if the chaps can do damage to the bags? I was thinking of putting the 3m film under them for protection.

actually what I was referring to is the part of the bag that is exposed between the rear bars right behind the rear floor boards. The passenger could slide thier foot backwards into the bags, or stones could get thrown up into them. Sorry for not being clear.
TC I used the 3M film on the front of my van to cover the bumper 16 months now and still looks great, or maybe I should say I can't see it except for the very edge when I look for it. I would think if you have hard curves it would wrinkle unless you cut a slice through it and overlap it.
The top of the bags is another issue. Care must be taken getting on or off. Maybe I should wear bedroom slippers.

I would go with the film, I planned to on mine when it was new, but didn't get around to it soon enough.

My wife bought her Lexus used, and it already had it on the front. It goes over all the curves, even the very rounded front corners smooth as can be. It just looks like paint and clear coat.

I like it better than chaps because it protects, but leaves the paint. Hiding good looking paint under vinyl or leather doesn't look as good as shiny paint, but that's just my opinion :)

I like to see the paint.

You can get it at most any good Window Tint shop, and there are instruction videos on the makers web sites.

But I'd have them do it. I've tinted my own windows before, and they came out great. Tried to do my tank and failed miserably.

If you pay a shop to do it, it'll come out perfect. Many high end cars have it, and it wraps curves, even as tight as around openings on air dams perfectly.

I had trouble getting the film on w/o wrinkles and bubbles. Maybe I used the wrong brand.
So, I decided to forget about it until marks, chips.....whatever....get so bad I can't stand it and then go to bars or chaps. Meanwhile. I've been "stepping through" instead of throwing my leg over.
Also, it seems that any person that wants to sit on my bike, hits the bags with his heel. So I've been telling them to step through.
