oil leak 1600 nomad

I have a buddy that asked a question on his friends vn1600, there appears to be an oil leak, left side rear, my first thought was the shifter rod seal, or maybe the drive pulley seal? any other suggestions? Also how easy is it to replace those seals, or does the case have to be split? or can you do it from the outside.

Sounds like it could be the clutch pushrod seal. Easy fix.

If it's drippimg by the sidestand, it probably is the clutch rod seal. That's easy to fix.

It could also be the final drive pinion seal if it smells like gear oil.

I agree and it is critical to know which oil type it is. Engine or gear oil and gear oil has a string sulfur smell. If it is gear oil it slings up the drive shaft and leaks out at the rubber boot.

And IF it is gear oil most of that gear oil will bew in the driveshaft tube ;leaving not much in the gear box where it belongs.

The most common leaks are caused by putting the book called for amount in that gear case!

The book states how much..... The book is WRONG.

The right level is either set with the bike down on it's side stand and or set down on a 2x4 flat side down, and NO MORE!

Once a seal leaks it won't stop. Capillary action will allow it to remain leaking until it is cleaned or replaced.

One of the Mean Streak owners on that forum had a rear drive leak that came out of the from boot. It ended up being the o-ring. I'll get a link to that thread and post it.

And +1 on the correct amount. I have always been told to fill to the bottom of the fill opening while on the kickstand.

I replaced all the seals in my final drive last year, and after about 5~600 miles, it was leaking out of the boot again. I ordered a double lip pinion seal so I could replace that one again, when I took it apart, all I could find wrong was the "O-ring" that is on the end of the pinion was broke, I replaced it before I went on a 3500 mile trip this past summer, and it hasn't leaked yet. While I had it out, I did install the double lip seal.

My pinion seal failed twice in 37,000 miles. First one covered by factory warranty. Second one quit on its own before I traded.
