Replacing rear shocks
Got one rear shock dumping oil, want to replace both. OEM shock pricing is well, shocking...What are my options that are more budget friendly? These are air-over-hydraulic.

Let me guess, it was the drive side shock that was leaking ? I had mine replaced under warranty.
My guess is the dealers have replaced quite a few that were not covered by the warranty. I would start there for a recommendation ? Have you looked at the Progressive website for a replacement shock ? |

Yep, the drive side....The dealer here is of no help. Warranty long expired. Please send a link for Progressive. Thanks

This is from a older thread off the Vulcan forum. Not my bike or post. But may help.
Here’s my mods to a 2011 Voyager: Ohlins HD 146 rear shocks with Racetech 4825040R springs. 47.8mm diameter, 254mm long, 4kg/mm spring spec. About 25mm preload. Shock has same stock eyelet mount size, no shims required. The mount end is a little narrower than stock. I added one washer. Racetech front springs 1.1 kg/mm. Racetech spring selector will indicate preload. Stock is 35mm Kawasaki manual says 3.2” rear wheel travel. Stock shock sag with just bike is about 3/8” @ 30 psi air. With rider and gear 1”. Sag with Ohlins shock about the same. Manual says about 390 lb front, 500 lb rear . Each fork or shock carries 1/2 fr-rr respective load. I found the stock suspension soft in front, too much dive on braking. The replacement springs are constant rate to calculate rate needed for preferred sag with preload. You can’t go wrong choosing near the stiffest springs from Racetech. These bikes are heavy. Peg observation correct, that Ohlins shock much better than stock. Wife and I ride loaded to near but under GVWR.

I just ordered and installed these. I'm 300 lbs, usually ride 1 up with approx 30-40 lbs of gear in storage. They do lower the bike .75 inches in the back and I also let my front end down on the pinch clamps about 1/2 inch. Pipes do scrape a little on hard corners but you can ride in such a way to avoid this. Let me tell you.. I was a little skeptical due to the price point but the handling is night and day. It has 5 preload settings. Got mine on 4 - fairly stiff but I'm a big dude. Bike has never ridden better.
