I didn't buy my Nomad thinking of the fuel economy, but since gas is getting more expensive, I decided to take a look at it. Since November of last year, I carry a pen in my saddlebag and jot down the mileage on the fuel receipt at fill-up time. Yesterday, I entered all 39 receipts into a spreadsheet, and here's a summary of my analysis:
# Entries 39 Total Gals 133.954 Total Cost $427.67 Total Miles 4916.1 MPG AVG 36.700 Min MPG 31.76 Max MPG 45.38 Min PPG $2.879 Max PPG $3.649 (PPG = price per gallon) Yes, I guess I really am anal about some things, plus I'm a computer geek by profession - a particularly nasty combination, but the two go hand-in-hand. I plan to continue appending to the spreadsheet in the future. I just thought some of you might find this interesting.

looks like I'm right in the ball park. I don't always keep track but I did on my 2000 mile trip last summer. Mainly all highway I got an average of 38 MPG over the 2000 mile trip.

I would have Cindy check mine every time I filled up. It was always 40 to 42 for some reason. Now I fill up and look at Cindy, she just says 42 without even figuring it

I really don't think much about fuel cost (even though I now pay over $4 for gas) but more about the total cost of ownership.
Even with added bling and mods, Tires, tool and maintenance, tax, registration, and insurance, I figure I've spent $23,000, and ridden 30,000+ miles. I could sell it real quick for $5k, and perhaps $7k if I waited around for the right buyer. that could bring the TCO down to a max of about $18k or 60 cents a mile. If I ride it 60,000 miles, spend another $8k and sell it for $3k the TCO will go to around 47 cents per mile. Believe me, I'd pay a lot more to ride this machine. |

CQ, That's a good way to look at the cost of ownership. However, when you ride instead of when you would have driven, like to work or errands, one can subtract the differential between the bike and a car costs and come out even better. But in any event, I'd pay more too.
My MPG range has been 36-42 mpg, except when taking the ERC course when it went to about 20. |

I filled up on Thursday, and put in $21.50 for 18 litres. I travelled 150 miles on that at 37.9 mpg.

I figured my mileage when I first bought the bike and every couple of years since then just when I'm curious. Mostly though, I just ignore it. I figure if it's good I'll brag and if it's bad I'll bitch so......
I know it doesn't get great fuel mileage, but it sure does better than my truck!

Everyone talks about fuel mileage and fails to take into consideration that with an uncorrected speedometer/odometer you're actually putting an average of 10% fewer miles on the bike than you logging. So if your getting 38 MPG deduct 10%. Makes a big differance, huh?

From what I read (and I haven't tested this) on the bikes with electronic speedos (no cable to the front wheel like Nico's bike has) the speedo is about 10% too fast, but the odometer is right on if you have the stock rear tire. My odometer is probably a bit slow as I have a slightly taller rear tire.
Again, I haven't tested this myself, but as it is all electronic it is totally possible that this is true. |

I have heard the same. I have checked my odometer against the highway mile markers and it's right on. That's why I don't feel I need a speedo healer, I'd rather have accurate mileage and calculate the speed in my head. Besides, it keeps me awake.

I only get 34 mpg. But I take off from stop hard, and drive fast on the freeway (70-80)
Some time I'll have to take it easy for a tank and see how good I could get, but the few times I've tried, I said "awe screw it" before I got very far into the tank :) My 1500 Nomads got 37 mpg driving the same way. |

my odometer is right on, and at an indicated 70MPH, I'm actually traveling between 68 & 69 MPH, so my speedo is pretty close. My mileage ranges from 34 - 35 mpg around town, and around 47 -48 mpg on the senic highways. When riding with a group staying around 60 - 65 MPH, I get 50 - 51 mpg. Overall average is about 42 -44 mpg. The bike runs "sweet", but I think a little on the rich side, or pretty close to what it should be.
