Another Exhaust Question

As I put more miles on my 07 Nomad I have begun to think that this catalytic converter must go. I've searched the forum for exhaust threads, and there are a ton of them, but one that was of interest was changing out the stock mufflers for aftermarket. It addressed returning but not the elimination of the CC.

As I look at the stock exhaust system it appears to me that installing aftermarket mufflers wouldn't do much since the goat belly will remain. I guess I already know the answer to this but in order to get rid of the CC, doesn't entire exhaust system from header to mufflers have to be replaced? Does anyone make aftermarket mufflers that bolt up to the header crossover and eliminating the CC?

Vance & Hines or Cobra... both make full exhaust systems for your Nomad.

If you can find a set of V&H head pipes, then you can use just about any mufflers you want. You just might have to make a set of adapters to mount them. But that's easy to do.

There's a lot of info on gutting out the goat belly, but also a lot of opinions by those who have done it that it wasn't really worth it. I've seen somewhere a guy in Sweden was making a gb replacement manifold, a real nice welded stainless tube unit. I decided to just leave mine.

I gutted the goatbelly on my 06 and wished I hadn't. I did not like the sound and the bike had less torque. I put a stock one back one.


I don't think the bypass made in Sweden is available anymore.

I have a set of Cobras I just took off, too loud for me, but you might like them.
They were on the 06 Nomad I just bought with only 6800 miles on them. He had the dealer put them on when he bought it new so all hardware is here and it's a pretty easy swap.

Get a set of Cobras. They are easy to install, sound great, and they eliminate that hunk of heavy metal in the middle. You won't be disappointed. I bought mine used on ebay for about $300.

Will this Cobra exhaust system eliminate the cat? It appears to still be on it in this picture. The last thing I want is to purchase an exhaust system that accommodates that darn thing.

Also, the listing says it the use of an aftermarket fuel system module is recommended. I have always rejeted the carbs on my Harleys when installing a performance exhaust but hoped it would not be necessary to make this type of mod, in the case of my '09, to the ECU.

The only exhaust that uses that goatbelly catalytic convertor is the stock exhaust system. V&H or Cobras will eliminate it completely.

Just found them new on ebay delivered for $453, an excellent price for a full exhaust. For Harleys they always seemed to be
$600-$900 and stupidly for the Rocket 3 about $1100.

Anyone on the need to modify the ECU and the dealerships don't seem to want to talk about it. I don't want to blue the exhaust or burn a valve.

They all benefit from a fuel controller of some sort... I had a Dobeck on my Nomad, and installed their EJK on the Voyager.

They're intentionally lean (see what I did there?) from the factory. The Nomad ran much better, used lower grade fuel, and provided much improved fuel consumption figures after the Dobeck was installed. And that was with a mostly stock exhaust.

The Voyager showed similar (if not quite so good) improvement.

Fuel management is now one of the first things I'll change on a new bike... Air and exhaust can wait their turn.

Thanks Peg and I do get the "lean", though I can't figure out how you changed the font. :)

On my Rocket I used a free program called Tune ECU. TuneBoy out of Oz designed the original software to essentially break into the ECU to reprogram it but it cost about $400USD. I believe it was a guy in France who developed the free TuneEcu software. HANSO of NZ tweaked one of the standard tunes for my Rocket 3 to get the perfect mixture.

I wish we had something like TuneEcu for the Nomad. I am no familiar with either of those modules you mention.
