Is the '00-'04 the bastard child?

I'm constantly looking for new additions or ideas for my Nomad. Over the last two years with my bike I have noticed something. Lots of parts of parts for the new 16's and then there's the phrase "carb model only". I see this quite frequently particularly in my quarterly edtion of J&P which I so affectionately call "Biker Porn". The perfect example is the nice chrome dash piece that goes under your speedo. The part is the same, you would just have to cut to holes in it to allow for the digital control buttons to fit through. In nine years they haven't made a part that will fit this? I could be wrong, My old bike I knew all the nooks and crannies to find parts and maybe with a little more research I'll begin to find some of the other places for Nomads. It just seems to me when I go to find parts I have two choices: a carbed 15 or the new 16. Is my '03 FI a bastard child? The most recent example is the Saddleman Profiler seat. I'd like to buy one. There's one for the carbed and one for the 16. My understanding is the one that fits the carb'd requires significant mods to fit on my FI. It's an awfully expensive item to have to modify.

Am I the only one who has noticed this about the Nomad line?

We bought a carbed model Mustang seat and put it on the wifes 04 Nomad. I had to make a new front tab and pop rivit it on the seat in place of the orginal front tab. It wasn't a hard job at all. Just make a tab like the one on your stock seat out of mild steel and paint it.

I have never had a problem finding parts for my '01 FI. Right off you refer to J&P and I have noticed their catolog are not always right. I see things in there that are so wrong but haven't called them on it. There's just too many mistakes. Whoever writes those are wrong half the time. I don't shop there anyway and J&P is 60 miles away. I order from Dennis Kirk, Competition Accessories and Shade Tree. I like to shop the internet too.

Is the '00-'04 the bastard child?

yridehd:

I have an '04 1500FI; and I will agree that it is more difficult to find accessories for our bikes. I have even had to call to be sure that the part or accessory I am buying will in fact work on the 1500. A couple times it has paid-off to do so due to misprints in ads or catalogs.

Anyway; let me know sometime what you may be looking for as I have been doing my best to keep a file of links and etc for places to go for specific items. Just PM me.

Greg

I think the issue is mostly that distributors don't bother to update that a part also fits the FI. I think this is mainly J&P's problem. They choose to take the easy road and lump it into the original 15 and the 16. I agree about J&P and I always have to remind myself that they lean toward the HD crowd. Just like Dennis Kirk leans towards sportbikes.

I enjoy hunting. It is my favorite thing to do. What I dont like doing is hunting, researching, working hard to earn money, ordering, realizing the part never fit, and have to send it back. I just wish someone would keep a more up to date listing of what actually carries over. I find it strange that many distributors carry so many parts for the carb'd bike when there are less and less on the road every day (don't get me wrong I loved the carb'd bike too).

I dont think there is any difference on a carbed 1500 or a FI bike, maybe in the case of some breather assemblys it does, but hardly likely on most of the dressup parts.

The dash is different. You also cannot use thunder's key relocation kit on it. I have a whole list of items I'd like to install but they don't make them for the FI
