Gas mileage down to 35 mpg

I run a K&N Air filter, cleaned and oiled. New Plugs. New Oil, Mileage is down. Wonder what I can do to get the mileage back up into the 40s? Any ideas would be grateful. Thanks

So, did you clean/oil the filter and change the plugs because your mileage is down, or is the mileage down after you did those things?

I do a change of oil every year. Mileage was down a little bit last year. Will try the throttle housing.

OK, but did you see any further drop in mileage after you did the filter, oil, and plugs, or is it the same as before you did all that? Cleaning the throttle bodies will probably do it, but if it dropped after you did that maintenance, something you did then may be making it worse.

Everything they said! Also, if your plugs have some hi-mileage on them, go with Iridiums, check and make sure the vacuum lines/intake aren't leaking, check for your wheels/brakes/driveline doesn't have any drag in neutral....
Also, on your Efi controller, make sure your settings haven't changed....try and lean the mix slightly around town....
Pretty sure its the throttle body....these bikes can run really ratty when they need cleaning....

Are you basing your MPG on the first tank of gas this riding season? Specifically the tank of gas you probably added stabilizer/additive to while parking the ol' girl last year?

My first 100 or so miles of the 2020 riding season were with the tank of gas I loaded up with Stabil last November. In the 40k miles I've put on my 05 1500, the gas gauge needle doesn't budge until I've racked up 80-90 miles. I noticed this year that I had only ridden 50 miles on the tank and the needle was indicating 3/4. WOW I thought! It seemed the gas gauge had suddenly decided to become accurate? LOL!

The more miles I rode the more I noticed the needle was falling at a much quicker rate than ever before. Then it hit me. I experienced the very same dilemma with my 1992 BMW K75 about 10 years ago. No, it didn't have a gas gauge but it did have a low fuel light. My first 100 or so miles on the tank of gas I put it into storage with was giving me horrible MPG. One of the guys on the Motobrick forum said he had experienced the same thing and blamed it on the "junk" we put in our tanks at the end of the riding season each year. I was skeptical but had no other explanations of my own or from anyone else.

Sure enough after burning up as much of the gas as I could and diluting it with fresh gas, over the course of the first two fill-ups of the riding season, the ol' Beamer regained its former MPG. I am anxiously awaiting the same results with my Vulcan this year.

Maybe some of you are scoffing at my theory? I wouldn't blame you! I'm going into my seventh riding season with the Vulcan. I have never had it produce such crappy MPGs to start of the season but this season is an exception.

EDIT: Like you, mooserd, I am accustomed to getting MPGs in the 40s, mid 40s specifically. After filling up for the first time this season I calculated low 30s.

I did not realize how hard it is to get to the intake. I attempted to use a toothbrush, intake cleaner with the butterfly open. Did notice that there was a lot of carbon come off onto the toothbrush. This is my third tank of fuel this season. Millage 138.9 miles with 3.8 gallons of gas. Increased a little. Will work hard and more on the intake. Will update once this is completed

UPDATE: Will have I have done to my bike, I am still running around 35 mpg. I did notice that when running I can smell gas in the exhaust. New plugs, air filter, oil changed. Intake cleaned. Wondering if a Dyno would help????
