Flash, Don't look at the numbers or notches. Imagine the face of a clock for setting each pot. That's the procedure most or all use to set the TFI. No confusing your settings with other rider's settings this way.

2nd pot on the TFI??

remember pot two is the seat of your pants pot. it adds fuel when you grab a big handful of throttle.
It is also the one that will have the greatest affect on your mpg

OP, I agree with #2 having the biggest effect on mpg if you have a habit of dumping the throttle every time you take off. If you don't, the #1 will make the biggest difference. If it is set too rich you are burning excess fuel at all rpm's. I very seldom move the #2 but adjust the #1 occasionally depending on what elevation I'm riding in. When I first installed it, I had the #1 set at 3:15 at sea level. On the Custer trip, it was backfiring on deceleration and my mpg dropped to as low as 21 mpg until I backed off a little. Since coming back home I moved it up to 3:30 and I'm averaging about 38 mpg riding 2 up. I'm not very aggressive on the throttle very often. Every now and then I get a wild hair up my a$$ and twist it pretty hard through the first 3 gears.

I have pot #1 about 2;15-2:30. if you get too much higher it will make your mpg go south quickly. I have had pot #2 from 3-6 and it runs good all areas between those numbers without ping.

I totally agree with Cajunrider. My peak RPM was obtained with Pot #1 set at 3:15 but I still had a ping on 93 Octane. I increased Pot # 1 to 3:30. Pot #2 is set @ 6:00, Pot #3 @1:00, Pot #4 @ 9:00. If I ride alot of stop and go and varying speeds my mileage has been as low as 32 MPG and as high as 37 MPG. On open roads running more constant speeds 55-70 MPH, the MPG varies between 37- 40. On only one ocassion I got 42.5 mpg. I do ride 2 up most of the time and I get higher MPG when I ride 2 up. When riding solo I can enjoy the power more often by twisting the throttle therefore my mileage goes down.
My Nomad runs the best it ever has at these settings with only an ocassional very slight to no ping under most conditions. The set of the pants gain was considerable and the intake is completely stock and only debaffled stock mufflers. The goat belly is stock also.

CB those are some rich settings. I ran the same and my low fuel light always went on before 140 miles. I got no ping on regular with those settings.

Good mpg if your pot #1 is that high.

BD, I don't think he is going for the effect of better MPG's just now......

I just hope he takes the time to set the pots up right.

I will resist the want to lecture............ again.....

2nd pot on the TFI??

Hi Mac,
I appreciate and agree with all of the comments you post about the correct way to set up the TFI and other related topics. I'm more interested in no ping with good performance then gas mileage, my Nomad had a worse then average ping even running 93 and using 3 cans of Seafoam in 10,000 miles. I don't lug the engine, I keep the RPM's usually in the 2,400 range in the higher gears and shift at higher RPM's in the lower gears.

I'm wondering if it's something in the gas in your neck of the woods? West coast only has 91 premium and I could get no ping on 87 (regular) with your settings clay. Makes me wonder whats going on to still ping on 93? Air leak? Waddya think mac?

2nd pot on the TFI??

Set my 1st pot on 2:45,2nd on 5:30.So far,it seems to have increased seat of pants feel 10-15%.It responds quicker to throttle also.Ran middle grade reg.gas on first tank, got 40.8mpg ,half city, half hwy, getting on it occasionally. It seems about the same reguarding vibration.A little starting off but smoothing out with speed.Have the K&N right side filter, which increased noise a bit, blending in nicely with the debaffled pipes to give a grin producing sound.
