Yes, it can work. Helps if you stop on top on the lines. You can get rare earth magnets at Radio Shack. There's also a lot of these sold commercially.

There are only a few here locally that I have a problem with. I may have to give the magnets a try.

Wouldn't the magnets stick to the metal frame without the tape?

Those magical red light changers they sell for motorcycles are nothing but large magnets.

Just find an old hard drive and take the magnet out. Those have way over six pounds of pull.

It doesn't work around here, I tried it a couple years ago. The best method is to phone the town and ask them to adjust the sensitivety at that intersection.

One problem intersection in Columbus, I put in a work order with the city and got a call from the traffic engineer while he was on site telling me he adjusted the sensitivity, even giving he his phone number to call for follow up and to arrange to meet me at the intersection if needed.

Didn't ask him about the magnets but he says the best place to stop is ON one of the lines and for some reason he suggests the longest one. Nice to see the city responding! Haven't been back through that intersection yet but will see how things work soon.

I just tap the started a couple times. It sends out the same field as a magnet and works every time for me.

Here in Missouri, after you've come to a complete stop at a red light, you can go on through it. The "trick" is, you have to determine that you/ve been sitting there an unreasonale length of time, and no other cars can be approaching the intersection

Had a guy that installs the stop light loops share the secret to triggering the light. He said to put your front wheel at the point the lines all come together at a corner of the loop. He said he could use that trick and trigger any light with a bicycle. So far it's always worked for me.
