Harley sells out to Honda

Interesting purchase, but will Honda be willing to sacrifice their reputation for smooth running motorcycles just to get the sound of a Harley. Along with the sound come the vibrations due to the valve timing being set to create the sound that everyone tries to emulate. This will be interesting to see if they (Honda) do want the sound bad enough to sacrifice smooth for plop, plop, plop sound. Does this mean Harley clubs will now allow Honda’s.

That article is about a year old and it was an internet rumor.Hasn't happened yet so I don't think it will ever happen.

Those April 1st news reports aren't always on the up and up. The BBC's report on the spaghetti harvest in the Italian spaghetti orchards of course and Taco Bell buying the Liberty Bell and renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell come to mind.

I keep hearing people talk about the "Harley" sound. I think they lost is when they went to fuel injection. I know my Ultra sounds just like every other V-twin. To get that sound, I believe they have to be idled way down.

I enjoyed the article though ... reminds me of when we were kids and would tape pieces of cardboard to our bicycle wheels so when the spokes hit them, it would make a "motorcycle sound". I guess we were riding HDs. Kids without the cardboard were riding nomads. If we had only known then what we do now.

honda had the harley sound years ago on the shadow. harley tried to sue them and lost. the harley sound is created by several factors. the v angle and single crankpin, the single carb feeding both cylinders. this causes the engine to misfire on a regular basis at idle, giving the potato potato lope. the two large valves per cyl. contribute to a deeper throated sound. to me the two best sounding engines of all times are the original 883 sportsters with p cams and straight pipes, and the 8 hp. cushman eagle with a straight pipe. the new fi harleys idle smoother so don't sound like the old ones.

Ya I heard a similar story, waaayyy back and it was that Honda bought Harley Davidson outright. Period!

I knew it had to be a joke but printed it off and posted it at work to "get the goat" of every Harley guy there. It lasted maybe a half of a shift before it was taken down,... by a Harley owner no doubt.
