one edge of the tread will be higher in one direction with cupping. run your hand in both directions. if in one direction your hand moves smoothly with little resistance and the other direction is quite different catching on sharper and higher raised edges I would say it is cupping. To what degree is up to you to determine and to determine whether to continue use.
As to cause.... what is your tire pressure?

I had the same thing on my Nad..Just replaced the rear tire and it went away.. I knew I was running it low as it had a slow leak in it that got worse and I was trying to make it home from about 10 miles or so..The rear tire cupped just a bit, I fixed the flat but it made that buzzing sound until I replace it..I didn't even see the cupping until I deflated the tire to dismount it..

When we bought our 07 Nomad this summer i noticed the same thing on the ride home. I knew the front tire was low on tread when i bought it, but it passed inspection and was good enough for the 85 mile trip. Soon after, i replaced both tires and set the pressure up a little bit more than the previous owner ran. No issues since. Shop said the front tire was cupped a little and was likely what i was noticing.
bTW, both sets were the Marathon ME880's. He ran 32 psi front, i was recommended to run 40 psi.

I agree with 40psi. I see no reason to replace the tire prematurely if you run the right pressure and handling is fine. Wear may correct to some degree. Up to you to bear the noise.

All tires on all bike cup sooner than later. When they do they howel. You can ride harder to skuff the cupping, which can change the sound, maybe make it leave for a while, or hand skuff tires, but cupping is going to happen on any tires at some point.

I agree with what Mac said "all tires will cup", but maintaining pressure will limit how much it does cup. Below is a photo of a Metzeler ME880 (left) and an Avon Cobra (right), both rear tires off my bike. Both tires have around 7,500 miles on them. The Metzeler is worn down to the wear bars, and the Cobra still has half the tread left. Both had cupping, but with the sipes (tread pattern) being closer together on the Metzeler, I was able to run the tire till I wore it out. It was noisey, and did have vibration in the curves. On the Cobra, the sipes are farther apart, so the feathering of cupping got bigger, too the point that in curves, It sent a vibration thru the bike that would rattle the fillings in your teeth . I always ran 40~41 psi in the tires, but I believe if I had ran 45~46 psi, the Cobra would have lasted a lot longer. If you look close at the Cobra, you'll notice one side of the sipes is higher than the other (cupping), and if yo look at where the sipe goes to the center of the tire, the center wear is not smooth on the sides, another result of cupping. I rolled the tire thru dust so it would be more noticeable. Let me say that while the tire was inflated, the cupping was not noticeable visually, but deflated, it couldn't be missed.

This is a brick with 9,000 miles. It was dead at 8,000 miles, but the season was late Fall, so i rode on it anyway.
It is off camber to the left from the crowns of roads, has cupping, which i s a little hard to see, but if you look it's there. The other tire is a Sp5000. And has been on ever since.

You're right TC, it is a Goodyear TripleTred 205/60-16, and I do love how it rides and handles...
