GPS sunlight filter

Has anyone found a filter/screen that works to reduce light washing out GPS units?

In bright light, my Nuvi 550 will wash out (as most of them will). In looking at marine websites, some folks like the "NuScreen" covering, but then you see just as many reviews of folks that say it doesn't work.

Garmin has their own brand but again i read mixed reviews.

I've even thought about mocking up my own shade for it.

Any thoughts?

Some have made their own visors from a square plastic bottle. They look as good as a factory version when painted black and installed.

I made one at first and it worked great but was unwieldy. Then I found this. http://glarestomper.com/ This thing is fantastic and so simple. Check it out.

I also have the Glare stopper.. Like it alot,BUT it is not 100% perfect,If your angle is right the sun still sneaks by, but 98% of the time is good,,,,,, I heard about someone who picked up a plastic 3x5 card box and cut out the bottom and fit it over the GPS not sure if the size of your GPS and if that will work

Thanks for the ideas. There seems to be good feedback for glare stomper. The product looks good on the website.

I appreciate the inputs.

Those Glare Stompers look pretty weird. I don't think I could put one on my bike. Not only that but it seems like it sticks out in front of the unit so far to block the sun it would block your view of the screen.

I have one and like it. Its how you angle it and it protects the screen when not in use

I actually use a glarestomper on my HTC Android phone that is mounted on my bars, it works great overall, but just sometimes the angle of the sun is wrong and you just got to wait till you are heading another direction or hope for a big cloud

Good luck

It was "hammer" who came up with the home made visor for his GPS,. I've seen it and it not only looks good but it does the job great. You should be able to find the thread where he gives instructions. But basiclly it's a plastic recipe box you're wife might have with her recipes in it. I think he took the lid off, cut the top so the power cord and mount could connect. I had already bought the "glare stomper" or I would have made one instead. I have no issues with the glare stomper because until they come out with a better screen,... nothing is going to be perfect. I'll hook up with "hammer" and see if he'll chime in here.
