It goes in with a positive clunk and idles right, but barely moves forward.

Well Jeff, I'm still guessing maybe it is a bent shifter fork. I am not overly familiar with these transmissions, but it sounds like the linkage indexes right but the fork doesn't move the gear along enough to engage. If you shift into second or third can you get the bike to move forward?

At this point, I can't get it to go into 2nd or 3rd. When it was moving, then it would go into gear.

Is it possible to replace the shifter fork without taking everything apart?

Question

Why not ask the Kawasaki Mechanic on the Partner Links site. It sez questions answered every nine seconds. Worth a try anyway.

Jeff since you told me last year you clutch was starting to slip and it's obvious your not going to be riding it anytime soon, why not at least start tearing it down. Who knows? you can have granaded your clutch backet and spring completely (never heard of that) but it's possible. It has to be done anyway??

Absolutely not.

If the shift fork is bent it won't stay in gear. It will seem to pop out. If one is broken you won't be able to shift past it. When my 1-2 fork finally broke (after being bent for 20000 miles) I could go from first to neutral, and nothing else.

It doesn't sound like a fork problem.

To get to any part of the transmission you will need to split the cases. So plan on either a rebuild or swapping in a used mill. If indeed it is a trans problem.

While I was riding the bike would seem to pop out of gear though.

I tried one of those before and they want to charge you for their answer.

Wait till you get our bill.
Got any plans to work on this yourself or send it to a dealer?

I'll pay you in beer instead.

Thought I would change out the clutch spring since I've never done that and maybe the clutch plates to see if that helps. If that doesn't, then it looks like finding a mechanic or the dealer.

I think your clutch is screwed from quickly reading through this. There may be something else going on once you get that taken care of, but I would start by looking at the clutch.
