help a newbee
I bought a low mileage 2006 Nomad and I'm ready to change the oil for the first time. I'm guessing the oil filter is on the left side but when I took out the four bolts the cover doesn't want to come off. It looks like it is in 2 pieces but I can't get it to separate. In order for whole thing to come off the shifter levers would have to be removed and that doesn't make sense to me. I have always changed the oil in my vehicles so I know basic maintenance but I have never wrenched on a bike. Help??

Are you sure it does not have a spin on oil filter? Look some more under the rear of the engine. May be hard to see if the exhaust "goat belly" is still there. There is a "sticky" thread in this area for the manuals. A PDF download.

If I'm not mistaken that has a spin on filter like my 2005. Better get a manual if you can't find the filter. Good luck.

Make sure you put whatever 4 bolts you removed back where they go. I suggest you get a service manual and read it.

Just FYI... The cover you were trying to remove does come off with just the 4 bolts.
And yes the shifter needs to be removed to get it off. The bolt holding the shifters on has to be removed, not just loosened. It is in two pieces. But there is no need to separate them. You'll need in there if you change the clutch fluid.

That's good to know. Clutch and brake fluid are next on the list.

You should go to Gadgets Fixit site, it will show you a lot of stuff about your bike that you'll need to know.
