Tell us what model and make sure you have oil. Sounds to me like perhaps all fluids need checked.

Do a search about plastic oil gear. You may be in for a rough time. Sorry.

That's only a concern if it's a 1999. Which it is in this case.

DO NOT START THE ENGINE AGAIN! YOU NEED TO CHECK THE OIL GEAR. Hopefully you havent lunched your engine.

I think you have to remove the clutch assembly to inspect it. Someone with a 99 can give you more details. I never owned a 99 myself.

You will have to remove the right side frame rail and the clutch cover. Pull the clutch basket and you will see the oil gear. Instructions for doing the clutch will get you tto the gear and back out if its ok. From what you are saying finding it in one piece is unlikely. Instructions to change the clutch spring can be found here.

http://www.gadgetjq.com/clutch_spring_replacement.htm

I hope it doesn't end up like mine did.

it sounds like the oil gear to me, I'd be taking a look at it to see if there are any teeth left on it. Or if it has a Jog installed perhaps it has failed.
