Glad to be able to see you write about this. Could have been much worse. I'm a firm believer in wearing all the gear. ATGAT saved my a$$ once. Banged up like you but it could have been much worse and it all healed. Get well soon.

Glad you made it thru that mishap.
That helmet looks very familiar as I have one in my garage that went thru a mishap in 2009. Front left side is ground almost off and I never get on a bike without a helmet now. I wouldn't have a face (some would consider that a improvement) if it wasn't for that helmet. DC

The Boys in The South would say Armadillo's..and wild hogs will get you..the folks riding the west say coyotes..and coon's.are a problem..and everyone say's deer are a major danger..."down under" it's the bloody roo's !
All said...the helmets are a good idea, and about any other body armor you can think of..(I'm researching the "Fire Hose Pants and shirt's")..having been a wildland fire fighter..I know first hand that "fire hose material" will take a heck of a beating ! last Monday I went for a ride with 4 other guy's..we were in the High Sierra, Switch Back's.. near LaPorte Ca...and two dogs ean out in front of the guy in front of me (we were in a 25 mph curve..doing about 35 mph)...my riding buddy tried to dodge the dogs..and ate 35 mph worth of Black Top...took a lot of hide off his left arm/elbow..but the full helmet he was wearing has a mark about like the one in the photos in this thread...and he had no injurys other than the arm !...we stopped at a wide spot gen store, bought a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide..washed the arm ..and pressed onward ! |

I've had 2 majors and was wearing full face at the time.i guess I was too many years ago because I only wear a half lid now. Gotta get back in the habit I guess. Glad you're ok!

Did a ride thru Virginia & West Virginia last June with 3 other riders. In just 3 days, counted 15 dead deer along the highway and could smell quite a few more unseen carcasses in the ditches. Every morning there was fresh road kill along the sides of the roads. I've done the "dance" twice with deer, and countless times with raccoons, squirrels, dogs and cats. So far have been very fortunate to miss them all. This sobering story is a reminder that sometimes, no matter what we do, there is just no way to avoid disaster.
Hope you enjoy a full recovery and glad you had the gear that prevented anything worse!

I did the dance on the highway at 80 with squirrel once. I told my brother about it and his reply was that if it will fit on a plate it's safe to run it over otherwise you have to avoid it.

I see folks riding in shorts, t-shirts and bareheaded in this brutal Texas heat all the time. It's reality checks like yours that keep me in full gear every ride. I was in a bad horse wreck a couple years ago causing my lower leg a very unnatural angle so I can relate to fond memories of morphine. Glad you made the right choice and I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Glad to see you're better! I've been there, only mine was a car turning eft in front of me. Wear the PPE. Guys!! My police vest, helmet and heavy boots are PPE items which helped protect me. Without this, my doctor advised I woud have never survived...
