They kinda look like walnuts, before you take the hull off - but they're the wrong color and look too juicy.... so tell us already.

Those are wild American persimmons. They are pretty prominent in most parts of the US..lower 2/3rds. However, most of them go undiscovered or unharvested. They are ripe when they fall, the skin is VERY thin, and they are mushy. If they hit a hard surface they break. You pick them up on the ground intact from grassy or covered areas mostly. If you try to eat them a day before they are ripe, they will pucker your mouth they are so bitter. If you wait a day or two after they fall, they are too ripe and fall apart and you can't get the pulp out. You have to have a male and female tree in the general area or they will not produce fruit

Native Americans used to harvest them, mash out the pulp and spread thin and dry them into "persimmon leather" in order to keep it. It was sweet to chew. Early fruit-rollup I guess. Now you have to freeze it pretty fast to preserve if you are not going to use fast. I'm gonna dry some out this year and make leather..never tried that before.

You can't buy wild American persimmons in the store as a rule. There are Asian persimmons that are much larger fruit and farmed, but not the same taste.

Persimmon pudding is DELICIOUS!! A raw persimmon off the ground is delicious but you better make sure it was ripe or your mouth will draw up immediately. One 'green' one will ruin the whole batch of pulp if you get it in there.

Yes, deer and all other wildlife LOVE them they are so sweet. Good place to put a deer stand. I can reach mine with a crossbow from the house :)

There ya go...more than you ever wanted to know about the wild persimmon.

Thanks Todd. I'd heard those things were bitter. The deer and yellow jackets wrap my tree up every year so I ran over it with my tractor.

And there you have it folks.

The knowledge garnered by being a member on this forum is unnnnnlimited!

The nicest fruit i ever eat was when i went walkabout in Australia for a year,it's a custard apple, green and knarly on the outside and look's a bit like a handgrenade, but cut the top off and inside they are yellow to pinkish, and taste like Bird's custard

See, it's men like you that give nice guys like me a bad image. I look at a womans inner beauty and mind.

I don't think they ought to be making the same pay as a man for doing the same job, but that ain't got nothing to do with beauty.

Have the flood waters subsided from the massive rains you had last week?
