Avons are good tires but they likely won't wear as long as the Commanders. Nothing wrong with a good stiff sidewall on a bias tire for handling more weight, which won't hinder handling either. The important thing is to stick with proper inflation psi. Michelin engineers spend countless thousands of man hours testing new tires well before putting them out there on the market. They have a stellar reputation to back their products.

Is there something wrong with the tires that came on the bike? Ive been pleased so far 1700 miles. I just keep seeing people go with something else.

I changed my worn out Commander2's last year with new Commander2's and have 6,000 miles on the rear and 8,000 miles on the front. They seem to be the same to me and I would buy another set. I got them from jakewilson.com. I got 4,600 miles out of the stock rear Bridgestone and 19,000 out of the rear Commander2.

Just that they wear quickly. Around 5-8K miles.

The stock Bridgestone Exedras really wear pretty quick and are just cheaper budget tires compared to the Michelin Commanders. I even tried a pair of the Exedra Max series and was not impressed. I would rather pay a few bucks more for a quality set of really long wear tires like the Commander IIs and not have to deal with swapping tires out every riding season plus mounting and balancing expenses.

I am on my 2nd set also. The 1st front gave me 19k miles, the rear had 14k when it started cupping and the tread started to split, I blame this on me letting the pressure get low over the winter, it still had 4/32 of tread on it. The front is due to be changed again, this time at only 14k miles. I'm trying a Shinko 777 WWW this time around. The back tire seems to be doing fine so far, only has about 3500 miles on it , for now.

One thing I will say about the stock Bridgestone tires is they handle well and ride smooth. Too bad they can't make a good long lasting touring tire. Seems a lot of members are going a little wider than 170.....like 180 or up to a 200. I like the 180/65 16 rear Michelin....handles like a dream and very tough.

Anybody try a radial on the back? I had one on my 1600 Nomad and it was great!

Don't mix bias and radial on any vehicle

Because of very few choices other than the stock Stones, I can tell you many Nomad riders did this i.e. 180/70R-16 and it felt and handled great.

Darksiders do this all the time, but we all know they die a firey death in the 1st 100 miles. I understand that radial on the rear is not such an issue, but radial on the front and bias on the back is trouble. Never done it myself, so dont take this as gospel.

I don't know if it's the grooved concrete they use on almost all the streets around here or what, but I have never gotten more than 12k on the rear tires no matter what brand. Shinko seems to last as long as all the others I've used at a lot lower cost. Only weather I haven't ridden in on this bike is an absolute downpour. Shinkos handled that and the dry weather just fine.
