1998 Kawasaki vulcan 1500 transmission problem

I recently acquired my fathers 98 Vulcan when he passed away a couple months ago..... But it will only let me shift from 1st to 2nd can anyone help me figure out what's wrong with it and how to fix it? This bike means the world to me and I really need some help on it

The clutch seems to work otherwise?
How long had the bike sat, before you tried to ride it?
How does the oil look?
