Seat Question

2001 Nomad FI. I have a couple seat questions. The seat on my bike has buttons on the sitting area. I have pictures but don’t know how to post them. Is this a stock seat? I don’t see any markings telling me what it is.
If I was to go to a Mustang seat, would the nose part of it be narrower than what I have?
TIA

I doubt the standard Mustang seat is any more narrow at the nose than the stock seat. It may have a slightly more cut back profile for your thighs than the stock seat, which would feel more narrow. Perhaps someone else can confirm that as I never had a stock seat on my Classic. Do you have issues reaching the ground at a stop that you need a narrower seat? I'm 5'-6" with almost a 30" inseam and the Mustang seat on my 03 Classic was fine for me to reach the ground. I changed to a Russel Day long seat set, as the Russel Day Long is to me much more comfortable than the Mustang. The Russel seat is definitely higher, and the "wings" shape on the Russel seat make me have to sit up a bit at a stop (no issue to me).

I have the Mustang seat set, with the adjustable rider backrest, for sale if you're interested and willing to buy, and pay for shipping from Green Bay WI, 54304. My seat set looks like the attached picture. However, the Mustang page says it fits the 03 to 08 Nomad, so I'm not sure it'll fit your 2001 Nomad. Anyone out there know if a seat set for an 03 will fit a 2001?

Sounds like you've got an aftermarket seat. I've had both a 1600 and a 1700 Nomad. Both had stock seats and neither had buttons (which I would assume would be for heat).

It has buttons like the car seats from the 50’s and 60’s. I’d post a pic if I know how.
The 03-08 seat in Green Bay fro everything I have found is probably for a 1600 which won’t fit a 1500.

2004 was the last year for the 1500 Nomad. The frame on the 05-08 1600s was different. The seats will not interchange. I'm surprised to see Mustang say 2003-2008. Typo? Oversight?

No stock Nomad seat had buttons, Gus. Have you removed it and looked at the pan underneath for a brand or mfgr? Maybe it is a "custom" job from an upholstery shop?

It says it fits an 03-08 classic and an 05-08 nomad.

Ok, let’s see if this works. I am curious to know what I have. Obtw, I just ordered a Mustang while they’re still on sale.

Ive seen classic seats with buttons in a row front to back but never in that arrangement. Almost looks like someone added those to the stock seat.

I was wondering about that. It’s no wider and no softer. Butt starts hurting after about 80 mi. No brand name on the pan. Numbers on the pan cross to a clutch spring. Thanks for all the info.

Thing with seats is you need to determine when the discomfort starts, and where it originates from to best determine what type of changes are needed to increase your comfort. On my 94 BMW R1100RS I built up my own seat design with high density foam, shaped it to my design, then had a local upholstery shop cover it. Much better than stock, almost as good as the Sargent seat on my 2007 BMW R1200RT.

But things like hip angle, glutes support, width of the seat nose, support under your thighs, seat foam density all factor into a comfortable seat. Seat builders like Mustang, Sargent, Russel, Ultimate understand that, some better than others. Other riders I've know since the late 80s say Russel makes the best. Since I installed a Russel Day Long seat set on my 1600 Classic I have to agree. Here is some good info:
http://seatdynamix.ca/bike-seats/

Since I ride a cruiser Vulcan and a sport touring BMW I can relate to the diagrams showing the rider position and sitting bones or tail bones contact issues.
