I have been reading about this for awhile, finally found a shop to mount my tire. Now I have two questions I could not find the answers to. How long is a tire good for after manufactured?
(I know the date is stamped in the tire) second what front tire do you all run with a c/t? I'm thinking of using a Dunlap Sp5000
195/60R-16
Any help will be appreciated.
thanks
SAM

I went with a Cobra, same size as stock. I also run the SP 5000. No complaints.

That seems to be what most are using. I wouldn't want a tire that is over 3 years of age. They might be good for longer than that but I wouldn't want one over that age.

Size depends on what you are riding. I'm running a Continental Vanco 185/75/16 on a 03 1500 Nomad.

Asking tire size is almost as bad as starting an oil thread.

There will be lots of responses.

Check the following sites.

Good Luck

I'm running a 205/65/16 on mine but some say that is too wide due to clearance issues. I have had on for alittle over 6000 miles without any issues. Most use a 185 or 195.
Also I have a Elite 3 on the front.

A tire on the shelf at 6 years old is said to be not sellable, but I bet many are. Last I knew the Sp 5000 190/60 R 16 was getting put to bed. (No more being made) So if you can find one it will be pretty new.

I run that amd like it. It will not correct speedo error and I don't care much about the speedo and or the speed. What I care about is a little value and not having to put rubber on every 7,5000 miles, and I have that 7,500 miles on the tire and it is no where's near worn out.

The mate up front I have is the stock size ft and is a Dunlop 251 radial, and I like that too. It went on at around 9,000 miles and it is in good shape and has nothing to balance it. I staitic balanced it and it wanted nothing.

I emailed Dunlop/Good Year asking about storing a tire for future mounting. The reply stated that all liability on the tire expires after 6 years from the date of manufacture. They stated that it didn't mean the tire wasn't reliable anymore, just that the manufacturer wasn't responsible for it after the 6 year period. Being the conservative that I am, I wouldn't ride one over 5 years old. That's just me though.

I'ld ride one older tha 6 years so long as it wasn't dry rotted/suncracked, but I sure would not pay anything like full price for it.

I always look at the date code when I buy tires.
I won't buy tires if they are over 6 months old. No matter what they go on bike, car or RV. And I won't buy a tire made in China.

I bought Chinese tires for my camping trailer once learned a lesson when chunks of the tread started flying off at 55 MPH.

Sam,

What year Nomad do you have??

I went to the darkside with a 195/65 16 Vanco2 on the rear and stayed with the 150/80 16 Dunlop E3 on the front. I talked with someone who has been to the darkside longer than I and he switched his front to a 130/90 (stock was a 150/80) and says that this really improved the handling with a CT. Wish he would have told me that before I put a new tire on the front.

+1 for the Continental Vanco 2 195/65R/16. Speedo reading showing 75 has a 70 reading on my GPS. I found the ideal air pressure for my '05 1600 Nomad was 30#. Tried 35 first, went to 28, then settled for 30, which seems to be my best handling pressure. Pu t a Dunlop on the front at the same time. Vanco tread depth was 4/10" new so I can check how much tread I am using. Looking forward to 25K at least, Biggest advantage I found was better breaking on the rear. I have to be careful stopping too fast in case the bike behind me cannot stop as quick.

+5 for the Continental Vanco 2, 195/65R/16. Great handling tire.

My sweet spot is 28 PSI
