New trailer

A friend gave me his homemade camping trailer .He sold the trike he pulled it with.A new coat of varnish ,new tires,a light hookup and a trailer hitch from chuckster and I will be ready to go. I have never pulled a trailer before so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Some things to remember:

Remember the added width behind you. You'll get used to it quick enough, but gas pumps, hiway shoulders, and curbs will require a little extra attention at first.

When parking, try to park where you can pull through without having to back up. In a pinch, you can always unhitch the trailer, move it where you want it and re-hitch it back up.

Once you get moving, you will almost forget the trailer is behind you. You need to remember it's back there when you have to stop, and allow additional stopping distance.

Be prepared to give up some gas mileage. How much depends on grade, weight, wind, etc.

All good suggestions from CJ. Just remember the added weight behind you, especially on a wet road. Allow more stopping distance. Try to get at least 10% of the total weight of the trailer on the tongue. Some go a little more than that but 10% works good for me.

Thats a neat little trailer, and the price was right. You should get a lot of use out of that unit. Congrats on the great deal.

I have a Hopkins 46365. Cajunrider has a nice thread in the electrical section of the technical board. It's an easy add on, and worth the effort.
