Pinging question
I have a TFI installed on my 2007 Nomad. I can't seem to get rid of the pinging. After several setting changes I am now at: 3:30-5:30-1:00-9:00. I notice the pinging on moderate acceleration usually slightly uphill or into the wind. I run premium fuel all the time. Any help or suggestions appreciated!

Pinging question
Try increasing the setting on the #1 pot 30 min at a time to see if it reduces or eliminates the pinging. Are your air intake and exhaust pipes stock?

Pinging question
those are "fat" enough setting to stop the pinging. You have another "unknown" issue at hand. Is the TFI installed correctly?
Turn off all the pots and start the motor. First pot should be glowing green. If so set the motor to fast idle with the choke assist or the idle knob under the right dog bowl. start turning #1 pot clockwise until your artificially fast set idle (see above) starts increasing, keep turning until this fast idle starts to decrease (too rich) if nothing happens with this "experiment" then something was installed incorrectly or you have a serious intake leak around the injector system. Like I said, the setting your using should be almost too rich. Mine pinged like a pig on premium and now I'm running 2:45 first pot and 5:30 second pot. Other two are essentially off 1:00 and 9:00.

Pinging question
Are you lugging in 5th around 45mph and want to get up a hill hard and fast? 4th AND 5th are both over drive and you can force ping in a too high a gear at too low a speed on most any engine.
With 2 OD's that's easy. If you are doin 70 in 5th and head up a hill hit 4th. The Nomad is fastest of all in 4th, In 4th if you get lucky you might exceed 114 mph, shifting up at that point will just slow you down.

I'm usually doing around 70 or so (indicated) in 5th and increase throttle to maintain that speed up a hill, thats when the ping starts. Haven't tried downshifting to 4th. Didn't think I would need to, but I'll have to try it and see if there's any difference. |

Pinging question
Rank if turning the throttle doing 70 going uphill to maintain speed, turn 2nd pot up to 6 or 6:30.
I get less ping with mine with 1st pot 2:45, 2nd pot 5:30-6:00 than I get with 1st pot 3:30, 2nd pot 4:30. And much better highway mileage to boot. 3:30 on the first pot knocks off 5 MPG's when cruising on the highway.

Pinging question
Thanks for the advice. I'll try adjusting pot #2 and see if that helps. Would be nice to be able to decrease #1 a little to get some mileage back.

Pinging question
Are you sure you are not twisting the throttle more since the TFI install ? That was my decreased mileage problem.

Pinging question
I have also found that since recently installing the TFI that throttle twisting is a bad habit and not great for the gas mileage.
However I rode 2-up on the weekend and was on a flat straightaway, and doing 120 kph and applied more throttle with some pinging beginning to begin. Will increasing Pot #2 fix that problem?

Pinging question
Wanted to let everyone that helped with advise on this what the status is on the pinging problem. I ended up setting the TFI to 2:45-6:00-1:00-9:00. We took a two up trip around Glacier Park and back, about 400 miles round trip. The weather was not real hot, but despite that, if there was any pinging I couldn't hear it. Seemed to be 100% better. I also picked up about 4 mpg! If we get more hot weather, I'm anxious to test it then to see if there's any difference.
Thanks for all the advise and suggestions. |
