K&N air filter on FI

Will I need to buy a fuel processor now that I have the V&H Baggers & a K&N air filter replacing the stock Kawa paper filter?
No other air intake mods done at this time. Thanks -Rich

I'd try the Gadget resistor mod first & see how you like it. First I'd probably want to know: did your bike ping before you changed the pipes and filter?

NO pinging so far. BUT, I've only had the bike since Dec '07, so no warm weather riding. I'm in Sacramento & ride mostly recreationaly on weekends only. So, I guess, if it ain't pinging, so far so good??!! -Rich

My guess is it will ping some in traffic once the temps start climbing. You could do the resistor mod or the TPS adjustment, which cost nothing but time and a buck or so, and some folks report that that's all they needed even with a full air kit mod.

My guess is that they ride conservatively and don't live in the desert or a hot city.

Anyhow, get a feeling for what the bike will do now, so you have a better feeling of what's changed once you do one of the mods. Otherwise you won't know if there was any improvement.

I have cobra exhaust and K&N air filter on my 1500 and haven't any pinging and I've been through New Mexico and Arizona desert. I try to put a minimum of 89 octane in but prefer 91 or 93 if its available.

What octane gas were you able to buy there? Here we only get 87,89 & 91, which is not enough.

I went for a ride today, abet a short 10 miles. I jumped on the freeway & got up to 70 on the speedometer, back down to 55, then rolled hard on the throttle back to 75. No pinging. So until it starts pinging, I won't worry about a processor. BTW, I did not notice any invrease in power with the K&N filter. -Rich

Hey Redeye...I'm down in Livermore and I have a fuel TFI and still get pinging on 95+ days. I guess I could adjust for more fuel but it's an economy thing as well. I typically get 28mpg town / 35mpg highway. I have an 05 1600 Nomad with left side 1/2 Cadd filter, V&H pipes and a Kuryakyn Wildthing TFI. I also went 2 steps colder on my plugs to reduce running temp.

Hmmm, I still have the stock heat range. Do you think colder plugs actually helped?

I bought the bike used, so I may have to pull the plugs to see what part number they are. Anouther excuse to go to Sears & buy some tools. I need to get the "special" spark plug socket. Thanks BOB. -Rich

guess you can just change your paper filter to K&N w/o any problems it sounds.

Rich, Look in your left side cover under the seat. You open it with your key. Pull the rear of the cover toward you and then push the cover toward the front of the bike so as to not break off the covers standoffs.

There should be a tool kit in there with that plug socket.

Ron, I opened the left cover & found some sort of canister with a Kawasaki label in there. It has three ports, one blue, one yellow & one green port. Two have what looks like vacuum lines clamped to them. The third is capped off. On the front there is a vent & one port is labeled purge. The canister takes up the whole space under the side cover. Anybody have any idea what this is? I could not find the secret compartment with the tool kit.
Thanks -Rich

I posted this on the VROC forum & I found the tool kit is in a secret drawer under the canister. Rich
