On the road flat repair

What is everyone taking with them for flat repair, or are you waiting for a tow truck?

I have a Kuryakyn Power Point cigarette lighter socket mounted on the handlebars of my Nomad. I have it wired straight to the battery with its supplied 10 amp fuse.

I noticed that most all the small air compressors was fused for 15 amps. So I picked up a really small Slime 40020 top off compressor at Walmart for less then $10, I figured I could cut off the plug and put clips in it to hook straight to the battery if I had too.

It came with a 15 amp fuse in the plug. I had a couple 5 amp glass fuses so I swapped it out to the 5 amp fuse. I let air out of my back tire to 25 lbs and ran the little compressor for about 10 mins, the tire was up to 45 lbs and the 5 amp fuse never blew.

So I took off my seat and pulled the 10 amp fuse in the Kuryakn line and hooked up my amp meter there. It was only drawing 2 amps pumping into a tire with 40 lbs. I guess they fused the compressor at the line size or a little high. I know any electric motor will have a higher draw on start up, but it started so fast that I couldn't see it on my meter.

Anyways I have some peace of mind on long trips for less then $15. The air compressor and another $3 for a Slime tire plug kit at Walmart.

James

I would use a cel phone, a tow truck, and a new tire.

I have a fused lead for my battery tender, so I put the same type of plug on my compressor. No need to remove the seat.

I have the Slime compressor and a plug kit in my saddlebag. Power supplied by a pigtail hooked directly to the battery. Available anytime I might need it. So far never had to use it.

Has anyone ever tried the tire repair kits from J.P. Cycles that use a CO2 cartridge to fill the tire up after you plug it? Seems it should work just as well as an air compressor..

How many co2 cartridges does it take to inflate a tire?

More than you get in one of those kits.

I used to carry one on my road bike, but never really thought about using one on the bike. It would probably work just fine.

The plug kit I bought came with three CO2 cartridges. They suggested I buy a couple more, so I carry five all together. I'm thinking that my cell phone and a call to AAA would actually work better...but I guess in a pinch it's better than nothing.....
