Nomad 1600 Saddlebag issue

While opening my right side saddlebag the door almost came off in my hand. The door is held on by 2 hinges on the bottom. They are each held by 2 allen screws w a small plate and nuts on the back. Apparently they came loose w vibration over time. When I checked the other side they were almost all the way out so it might be something to add to your maintenance list. Does anyone know if you can order the hinge for the door separately as I lost one?

Sure can! From your local dealer or many online factory parts sellers. Try cheapcycleparts.com and find your bike and look up the saddlebag parts. This link may work.

When you put it back together, add some blue Loctite.

+1 on the vendor. I've dealt with them a few times and never been disappointed.

Looks like the hing is $14.26.... I'd add a few other items to the order so it's worth the shipping costs, e.g. K&N air filter element, oil filter, etc.

I try hard to make a point of going over the entire bike for possible loose nuts, bolts, screws,....at the start of every riding season.

That's a great idea and I do that myself once or twice a year as my riding season is all year round but it never dawned on me to check the hinge screws. I'm gonna check all the big and little stuff again though.

I found mine loose about 5 years ago. I got the next size longer screws, and some nylock nuts (all stainless), and used the blue loctite, hasn't come loose since.

Mine have worked loose as well, but I found it in time and used loctite. The two bolts that hold the bag onto the bike also work loose on my bike and have to be loctited as well.

Blue loctite

I have just purchased a Nomad 1600 and have been avidly reading the posts. Theres a wealth of information here and thanks to all.

My 2 cents worth .....I used blue loctite on a Honda Goldwing part once and the loctite reacted with the ABS plastic and made it britle. Go easy with it around the ABS. Personally I think I would pass on it and just check them more often. Not trying to rain on anyones parade here.

If something is loose it usually gets blue locktite.
If I take something off and it has threads, it usually gets blue locktite
If my dentures come loose,it gets blue locktite (to hard getting red locktite loose)

Instead of Loctite, you could do what I did and replace the stock nuts with nylock nuts. I never had to tighten them again.

The nylocks are a very good idea, and the blue Loctite I use is not a liquid, It is a thick paste and comes in a tube. You twist the bottom (like a tube of chap stick), and roll the threads in it. I like it a lot better than the liquid type.

Anyone tell me what size bolts I'm after? Lost two off the bottom of one hinge... Thinking I'll just run down to ACE and grab some compatible, but don't want to pull the other bolts in the morning. (YES, I'm lazy) :) Also assuming there's some sort of material between the hinge and the bottom of the bag, but guessing that a piece of bicycle tire tube will work wonders there.

I've seen it happen before. I put Loctite on my a few years ago and it solved the problem.
