'08 Nomad - Version 2.0

As some of you may know, I put down the Nomad on the trip back from the “Duffy Classic” in Chewelah, WA last August. A lot didn’t know as I wasn’t too proud of the fact as it was my own damn fault and I wasn’t going out of my way to advertise that fact (at least until now). Just outside of Metaline Falls, coming out of a RH hairpin curve I accelerated too fast and really scraped the RH boards. Cool, I thought – hey, if you’re not scrapin’ you’re not ridin’, right? Until the board caught in something and flipped the Nomad and I onto the left side and we were both skidding down the pavement.
There was no serious damage to the Nomad, just all cosmetic stuff to the LH side. Thank goodness Eagle Eye was along to help get the bike upright and assist me on the rest of the trip home; another 8 hours to go! I was bumped and bruised and ached all over, but nothing appeared broken and x-rays the next day confirmed that. I just needed 8 weeks of physiotherapy to sort out a wrenched left shoulder. It just reinforces the value of wearing proper protective gear.
The insurance estimate (based on all new OEM parts – tank $1200, saddlebag $1100, etc.) made the bike a write-off. But in my mind I knew I could fix the bike for a whole lot less, especially with a few parts picked up on eBay. I took the insurance settlement, bought the bike back as salvage, repaired it and had it recertified so that I could legally license it again here in Alberta.
Here’s a couple of shots before the repair work. As Eagle Eye said “I don’t think that’s gonna buff out, Al!”

And now:

And here it is in its new reincarnation:

Here’s some detail on the pinstriping

The paint colour is very close to the Candy Plasma Blue from the Vaquero. I fell in love with that colour when I saw the 2012 Vaquero at the bike show and ever since had in the back of my mind that I would want my Nomad in that colour.

And finally, here’s the HD Tourpak all painted to match. Just waiting for the quick release mounts from dshelly to arrive so that I can get it all mounted.

Kudos to Guy at Cyclemania Artworks in Okotoks, AB for all the paintwork, pinstriping and great suggestions for the project. http://www.cyclemaniaartworks.com/ While I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted, he was able to come up with some cool touches. Wait until you see my Thermos water bottle he painted to match!

Thanks guys!
Now I've got a list of performance mods to do next; Big air kit by bdog, K&N Filter, Power Commander and the list goes on. Then she'll perform as good as she looks!

Thank you very much! I've always considered Jared's as one great looking Nomad. To be considered in the same class as his is a real compliment!

Al, thanks for sharing. I am one of those who "didn't know". Sharing stories like this reminds the rest of us to be ever vigilant. There are enough things that can happen on a motorcycle that are out of our control, adding to the list by our own accord may not be the wisest choice. That said, I am really glad you weren't hurt worse and am truly impressed with the work you've done on the new ride....that looks awesome..... We gonna see that bad boy in Orofino come July...??
