Rolling Thunder Washington DC Rally

Wondering if anyone has gone and can tell me what it is like? I am really asking for how the walking is and not the ride. Wife has a hard time standing for a long time and I really don't want to walk her around or stand around for hours.

Also is anyone going this year from the NY area? Haven't made reservations yet but thinking about it.

Thanks!!

..I'v got a friend "Doc Hollywood/Doc Richards"(in the music business..google him)..He rode out to the Rolling Thunder in DC a couple years ago, He indicated he wont go again..due to the "management/political manipulating" that detracted from the original intent of the rally.

Just passing along his opinion that he relayed to me...(he rides Harley's now but was on a big Yamaha when I met him a few years ago)...

Someday I would like to go there for Memorial Day.
Don't know about hanging around listening to someone spewing shit from their mouths.
It's all lies anyway.

Having lived in the DC area for 20 years I have participated in RT a few times. There are several ways to do it:

1) Just ride to the Pentagon, get locked into sitting in the parking lot all day and wait for the ride out . . .

2) Hook up with an escorted ride to the Pentagon from most Harley Dealers within 50 miles of DC - nice group ride in (I generally hook up with patriot harley in Fairfax as their motor escort is the best coordinated one in the area).

2a) These rides generally have a "dump off" procedure for if you don't want to go to the Pentagon parking lot. So if you just want to break off and head in to DC to check out the Wall and other memorials and visit Thunder Alley, you can.

2b) Follow the escorted ride all the way to the Pentagon, wait it out and ride in with the main ride.

3) Just head into DC, find a shady place to park your bike, set up some lawn chairs and watch the ride go by.

I generally did 2a for most of the times I participated. A little waiting/walking in Fairfax, a nice parade in with a lot of spectators cheering and waving flags (literally brings tears to your eyes).

The first time I did 2b I swore I would never do it again as I had been there/done that. The next year a buddy of mine I hadn't heard from in 20 years called and said he was riding down and wanted to do the ride - so I did it again. We literally were the last bikes in Rolling Thunder that year - so it was a long day - but receiving the salute from the Marine who stands there for the entire parade at Constitution Ave made me forget the boredom, the heat, everything - and return his salute as he silently thanked us and we thanked him . . .

Tips: Bring water - Lots of it - for every bottle you bring - bring one frozen bottle to keep them cold - by the end of the day none will be frozen and will have been consumed. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a book, a camera, extra memory for the camera, extra batteries for the camera - bring yourself and prepare to be amazed.

Its a very moving experience however you decide to participate.

Napam,

What a great reply. That information is exactly what I was looking for. Even better there is a Hotel directly across the street from Patriot Harley. That is awesome. I printed out your reply and the info from Patriot Harley. They have what they call Ride for the Patriot and it is a whole weekend of activities. I am going to try and get there this year but if not the information you supplies is invaluable an just what I was looking for. Thanks again!!

I'm a member of rolling thunder this will be my 5th year in a row going.
If you go on Friday evening there is a candle light ceremony at The Wall that is very moving.
Also I would urge you to go to Arlington and The Tomb of the Unknown. I ride there with a friend from Vietnam and we both look forward to it each year.
Bob

Not bad. For the mall (ALL THE Monuments) we park & walk.
I stay in Falls Church, VA and traffic is not bad into DC.
