Oil change question

I'm getting ready to do the first oil change on my 1700 Nomad. The shop manual says the bike needs to be standing vertically upright to drain the oil. I haven't taken a close look at where the drain plugs are situated under the bike yet but is it really necessary to have the bike standing upright off the side stand to get all the oil out? On my old V-Star 1100 the drain plugs were off center to the left so the oil drained out just fine with the bike on it's side stand. I just got a lift but I don't know if the drain plugs are clear when the bike is on it yet. Just thought I'd ask you guys that know.

I just hop on the bike and hold it upright for a couple of minutes and then drop it back on the kickstand. Good enough

Got the oil changed today and it took more oil to fill it than the manual said it would with a filter change. A full 5 liters and that's even a little under half way up between the low and high marks. I did let it sit and drain for a while though. The manual says 4.3 liters with a filter change but that didn't even show on the dip stick.

You need to have the bike upright and level not only for the drain, but for checking the stick after you start filling it up. I put an even gallon in the hole, then run the bike for a minute or two and let the lube circulate through the filter and everywhere else, then after it settles, I screw the stick all the way down and back up for the read, and fill until it gets to the middle part between high and low. It usually ends of getting around 4.7 measured quarts to achieve that read. The two drain bolts are right up under the bike on the pan and easy to get to.

So I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. That being said, Cycle oil came in a 4 quart container, Thought it was 5 Qts like car oil. Looked like the same container. My first oil change was also 4.7 qts. Lucky I built a stand for my 1500 Classic to hold it upright. The mirror will not work on this 1700 bike. Could not figure out why I still needed more oil. DAH.

I use a motorcycle chock to keep the bike upright.
I park the bike in the chock all the time the bike is not in use, including winter storage.

I use this style that fits the smaller diameter filter.

That's what I need, But had to Pound a screwdriver through it to get it off. Not a happy first oil change. My new filter has a 17mm nut on the end. Hope #2 change goes better. I will be getting the wrench before the next change. There is no room to get my hand in there. It was easy on My 1500.

I like the below better, just a giant socket. Take your filter to Autozone to get the right size.

That looks good also, will it clear the cross over frame rail just in front of the oil filter (when attached to a socket wrench) on a Voyager model?

HAHA that's exactly what I had to do to remove the factory one, I was screaming in the garage. Wife came out to check on me said she thought the bike fell over LOL.
